How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

Recommended vaccines and medicines10

Routine vaccinesCDC ↗

Make sure you are up-to-date on all routine vaccines before every trip. Some of these vaccines include Chickenpox (Varicella) Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis (DTaP, Tdap, or Td) Flu (influenza) Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) Polio Shingles

COVID-19CDC ↗

All eligible travelers should be up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines. Please see  Your COVID-19 Vaccination  for more information.

CholeraCDC ↗

Cholera is  presumed to be present  in Syria. Cholera is rare in travelers.  Certain factors  may increase the risk of getting cholera or having severe disease ( more information ). Avoiding unsafe food and water and washing your hands can also help prevent cholera. Vaccination may be considered for children and adults who are traveling to areas of active cholera transmission.

Hepatitis ACDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers one year old or older going to Syria. Infants 6 to 11 months old should also be vaccinated against Hepatitis A. The dose does not count toward the routine 2-dose series. Travelers allergic to a vaccine component should receive a single dose of immune globulin, which provides effective protection for up to 2 months depending on dosage given.

Hepatitis BCDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers of all ages traveling to Syria.

MeaslesCDC ↗

Cases of measles are on the rise worldwide. Travelers are at risk of measles if they have not been fully vaccinated at least two weeks prior to departure, or have not had measles in the past, and travel internationally to areas where measles is spreading.

MonkeypoxCDC ↗

Monkeypox vaccination is recommended for any adult who anticipates any of the following activities during travel: Sexual or intimate contact with a new partner Sexual or intimate contact at a commercial sex venue, like a sex club or bathhouse Sexual or intimate contact in exchange for money, goods, drugs, or other trade Sexual or intimate contact in association with a large public event, such as a rave, party, or…

RabiesCDC ↗

Dogs infected with rabies are commonly found in Syria. Rabies is also present in some terrestrial wildlife species. If rabies exposures occur while in Syria, rabies vaccines are typically not readily available.

TyphoidCDC ↗

Recommended for most travelers. Typhoid vaccine is not 100% effective. Practicing safe food and water habits , including washing hands at key times , can also help prevent typhoid fever .

Yellow FeverCDC ↗

CDC recommendations: Vaccine is not recommended. Country entry requirements: Vaccine is not required. Updated April 23, 2025

CDC Travelers' Health, re-read weekly — the recommendation depends on your age, vaccines and itinerary: confirm it with a doctor or a travel clinic 4 to 6 weeks before departure.CDC ↗read 10.10.2026

The official advice, in full

Source: France Diplomatie (health advice, in French).

In brief
  • French travellers should ensure they are up-to-date with French vaccinations, including diphtheria, tetanus, polio, pertussis, and measles, before travelling abroad.
  • Additional vaccinations like Hepatitis A, typhoid, and meningitis ACWY may be necessary depending on travel conditions and duration.
  • Travellers should consult their doctor or an international vaccination centre well in advance of their trip for personalised advice.
  • To prevent mosquito-borne illnesses like malaria, travellers should use insect repellent, wear long clothing, and protect their accommodation.
  • Travellers should practice good hygiene, including regular hand washing and consuming only well-cooked food and bottled water, to avoid diseases like cholera.
  • British travellers should check Syria's healthcare provisions and ensure they have adequate travel insurance for medical treatment or evacuation.

Vaccinations

  • Hépatite A : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Fièvre typhoïde : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Méningite ACWY : en cas de séjour pendant la saison sèche (habituellement hiver et printemps) ou d’épidémie signalée ;
  • Rage : notamment enfants en bas âge, séjour en milieu rural ou éloigné des villes principales ;
  • Hépatite B : en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;

  • Se laver régulièrement les mains à l’eau et au savon ou avec une solution hydro-alcoolique ;
  • Éviter le contact avec les animaux en particulier avec les chameaux et les dromadaires ainsi que la consommation de viande de chameau ou lait de chamelle ;

  • Porter des vêtements longs et couvrants ;
  • Appliquer des produits répulsifs cutanés sur les zones découvertes du corps ;
  • Protéger son logement (moustiquaires imprégnées d’insecticide, diffuseurs électriques, serpentins à l’extérieur, climatisation, etc.) ;

  • Se laver les mains régulièrement avec de l’eau et du savon ou des solutions de lavage hydroalcooliques, surtout avant et après les repas et le passage aux toilettes ;
  • Veiller à la qualité des aliments et surtout à leur bonne cuisson ;
  • Éviter la consommation de produits alimentaires (poisson, viande, volaille, lait) crus ou peu cuits ;
  • Peler les fruits et légumes ou les laver soigneusement (à l’eau saine) ;
  • Éviter les crudités, coquillages, plats réchauffés et buffets froids ;

Health — Foreign Office

Before you travel check that:

  • your destination can provide the healthcare you may need
  • you have appropriate travel insurance for local treatment or unexpected medical evacuation

This is particularly important if you have a health condition or are pregnant.

Emergency medical number

Emergency services in Syria have been severely impacted due to the 14-year conflict and could be unresponsive.

Contact your insurance company quickly if you’re referred to a medical facility for treatment.

Vaccine recommendations and health risks

At least 8 weeks before your trip:

Syria - Level 4: Do Not TravelState Department ↗updated 06.08.2026 · read 16.10.2026

Updated 06.08.2026

Do not travel to Syria for any reason due to the risk of terrorism , unrest , kidnapping , hostage taking, crime , and armed conflict.

Do not travel to Syria for any reason.

The U.S. government suspended U.S. Embassy operations in 2012. The Czech Republic is the protecting power for the United States in Syria. The U.S. government cannot offer emergency or routine consular services to U.S. citizens in Syria due to the safety risks.

Unrest

Syria has experienced active armed conflict since 2011. No part of Syria is safe from violence.

  • Hostage taking, terrorism, unexploded ordnance, and aerial bombardment pose significant risk of death or serious injury. The destruction of infrastructure, housing, medical facilities, schools, and power and water utilities has also increased hardships in Syria.
  • The U.S. government strongly warns private U.S. citizens against traveling to Syria to engage in armed conflict. The U.S. government does not support this activity. U.S. citizens who undertake such activity face extreme personal risks, including hostage taking by armed groups, injury, or death.

Terrorism

There is risk of terrorist violence, including terrorist attacks and other activity in Syria. Visit the U.S. Department of State’s country reports on terrorism to learn more.

  • Bombings, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and assassinations remain a threat in parts of Syria.
  • Providing material support or resources to designated foreign terrorist organizations, including designated ISIS and al-Qa’ida (AQ) affiliates, is a crime under U.S. law. It can result in prison time and large fines.

Hostage taking

Hostage taking of U.S. citizens and other foreign nationals is a risk throughout the country.

Crime

There is a risk of violent and non-violent crime throughout the country affecting all residents regardless of nationality. This includes scams, kidnapping, armed robbery, and assault. Police struggle to respond to crime in rural locations due to limited resources.

Other

Unexploded ordinance

Landmines and unexploded ordinance are a hazard in Syria, especially in rural areas. Avoid roadside ditches, shoulders, and unmarked trails. Never touch anything resembling unexploded ordinance.

Air travel

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) and a Special Federal Aviation Regulation (SFAR) advising…

## FCDO advises against all travel to Syria

FCDO advises against all travel to Syria due to unpredictable security conditions and the threat of terrorist attacks.

UK government support

Consular support is not available from the British government from within Syria. The FCDO may become aware of support provided by other organisations which can be shared with British nationals. If you need help, call the FCDO in London on +44 (0)20 7008 5000.

Regional tensions

The US and Iran announced a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on 17 June in relation to the conflict in the Middle East, however the situation in the Middle East remains unpredictable. Since 8 July there have been strikes and retaliatory attacks by Iran in a number of locations across the region against US military and civilian infrastructure. There is a risk of more attacks and unforeseen escalation in the region. Before the ceasefire, the Iranian regime had stated its intention to target locations associated with the US and Israel, including organisations, businesses, facilities, and institutions.

British nationals currently in the Middle East should be prepared for possible flight cancellations, periodic airspace closures, and potential travel disruptions, and should:

- read  If you’re affected by a crisis abroad - GOV.UK . This includes guidance on “how to prepare for a crisis” with suggestions on what you might include in your emergency supplies and “what to do in a crisis”

- sign up to FCDO Travel Advice email alerts

- follow advice from the local authorities

- monitor local and international media for the latest information, including updates relating to airports and airspace which could close at short notice

- stay away from areas around security or military facilities

- keep your departure plans under review, and ensure your travel documents are up to date

- if advised to take shelter, stay indoors or find the nearest safe building or designated shelter. An interior stairwell or a room with as few external walls or windows as possible may provide additional protection. The greatest risk is from falling debris caused by intercepts, and you are safest inside a secure structure. Do not approach or touch any drone or missile fragments or unusual objects

Travel insurance

If you choose to travel against FCDO advice, research your destinations and get appropriate travel insurance . Insurance should cover your itinerary, planned activities and expenses in an emergency. Have robust security arrangements and contingency plans in place.

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad .

Terrorism in Syria

Terrorists are very likely to try to carry out attacks in Syria.

There are multiple terrorist groups operating in Syria. There have been several terrorist attacks across Syria, including in major cities, resulting in large numbers of casualties. Daesh, also known as ISIL/ISIS, continues to carry out regular attacks all across Syria, including in Damascus. Terrorist groups continue to post a significant threat to civilians in Syria and have shown they can carry out coordinated attacks against civilian targets.

Examples of previous significant attacks include:
  • on 7 July 2026, two improvised explosive devices detonated outside the Four Seasons hotel and Ministry for Tourism in Damascus, killing at least one person and injuring 36 others
  • on 2 July 2026, an improvised explosive device detonated inside a crowded café in central Damascus, killing at least nine people and injuring 22 others
  • on 2 June 2025, an attack in the Greek Orthodox Church of Prophet Elias, Damascus, killed at least 30 people

Foreign nationals, including British nationals, and the places they frequently visit could be considered legitimate targets. This includes:

  • military sites, security forces and institutions
  • government buildings and embassies
  • public transport and transport hubs, such as airports
  • border crossings
  • public squares and other crowded places
  • religious sites and ceremonies, and places of worship
  • hotels, cafes and restaurants
  • commercial venues, including markets and stores
  • residential buildings and compounds
  • sports venues and stadiums

Attacks could also target:

  • oil facilities
  • political offices and events
  • police stations
  • maritime facilities
  • hospitals, schools and universities

Types of attacks include shootings, large-scale co-ordinated bombings designed to cause mass casualties, suicide bombs, vehicle bombs, rockets and mortars.

Take particular care during periods of national or religious significance and on public holidays.

Terrorist kidnap

There is a very high threat of kidnapping from terrorists throughout Syria including from Al-Qaeda (AQ) affiliated groups and Daesh, formerly known as ISIL/ISIS. Terrorist groups operating in Syria routinely use kidnapping as a tactic for financial or political gain. There have been a number of kidnappings, including of British nationals and other westerners. Some hostages have been killed.

British nationals are seen as legitimate targets, including British officials, tourists, humanitarian aid workers, journalists, students and business travellers. If you are kidnapped, the reason for your presence is unlikely to protect you or secure your safe release.

The long-standing policy of the British government is not to make substantive concessions to hostage takers. The British government considers that paying ransoms and releasing prisoners builds the capability of terrorist groups and finances their activities. This can, in turn, increase the risk of further hostage-taking. The Terrorism Act (2000) makes payments to terrorists illegal.

Security situation

The situation in Syria remains volatile. Fighting…

Advisory summary

Journalism

Syrian authorities scrutinize foreign journalists and media. Reporters can face considerable restrictions in the context of their work. Armed groups in opposition-held areas have injured, kidnapped and killed journalists and other foreigners operating there. The Syrian Arab Armed Forces and other armed groups have also detained journalists in Syria.

International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. It does not apply between Canada and Syria. If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in Syria by an abducting parent:

  • act as quickly as you can
  • consult a lawyer in Canada and in Syria to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
  • report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies. Be aware that Canadian consular officials cannot interfere in private legal matters or in another country's judicial affairs.

Driving

You must be at least 18 years old to drive in Syria and have a valid certificate confirming that you have third-party insurance. There is zero tolerance for having alcohol in your system while driving. You must carry an International Driving Permit. International Driving Permit

Money

The currency of Syria is the Syrian pound (SYP). The economy is primarily cash-based. Credit cards are not widely accepted. You should carry enough U.S. dollars or Euros to cover your expenses. ATMs are available in major cities, such as Damascus and Aleppo, but are not always reliable. Due to international sanctions, several foreign credit institutions and banks have suspended their transactions with Syria. As a result, you may not be able to use your Canadian credit and debit cards. Contact your financial service provider before travelling to Syria to confirm whether you can use your cards there. Regulations regarding financial transactions, financial sanctions and currency exchange can change without notice. It’s illegal to exchange currency on the street. You must exchange foreign currency in banks or at official exchange counters. The Syrian pound cannot be exchanged outside the country. You will need to present official exchange receipts to exchange Syrian pounds into foreign currency before your departure. Keep all your official exchange receipts.

Religion

Syria is a multi-faith country. Alongside the majority Sunni population, there are large practising Shia, Christian, Druze and Alawite communities, as well as other smaller sects and religions. There are restrictions on unlicensed political activity and political parties are banned under the new authorities in Damascus.

Personal ID

You must carry copies of your passport photo page and visa for identification.

Illegal drugs penalties

There are severe penalties for drug offences in Syria. The penalty for drug possession is life imprisonment, and the death penalty applies for drug trafficking.

Money

Ramadan

Ramadan is a holy month for Muslims. The dates vary by year and country. During this time, you should:

  • check opening hours of shops and restaurants
  • be aware that if hotels and restaurants are providing food or drink in fasting hours, they may separate you from Muslim guests, for example with screens
  • follow local dress codes – clothing that does not meet local dress codes may cause more offence at this time
  • be aware that fasting can cause tiredness, particularly during the later afternoon and early evening
  • be patient and show tolerance

Is the whole of Syria advised against, or only some areas?

An area advised against does not rule out the country.

  • Official answers: United States: yes · France: yes · United Kingdom: yes · Switzerland: yes.
  • Keep your country of residence's advisory on booking day and on departure day: that is what your policy's clauses cite.

What are the entry requirements for Syria with my passport?

The rules depend on the passport, not on the destination alone.

  • French passport (France Diplomatie): Travel to Syria is formally discouraged for French nationals. A valid passport and a visa from a Syrian diplomatic or consular representation are required for entry. Residency exceeding fifteen days necessitates registration with immigration services.
  • British passport (Foreign Office): British citizens must ensure their passport is valid for at least three months beyond their arrival date in Syria. Entry into Syria is prohibited for individuals holding Israeli or Iranian citizenship. British citizens require a visa for travel to Syria, with processing times of approximately five to seven days.
  • American passport: the requirements are on the State Department country page (travel.state.gov).
  • Swiss passport: the FDFA refers you to the destination's embassy in Switzerland.
  • Pick your passport at the top of Before you go › Entry: the official text that concerns you comes first, with its “In brief” summary.

Do I need an insurance certificate for a Syria visa?

For a Schengen visa, yes: at least €30,000 of travel medical insurance (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, art. 15).

  • Many other countries ask for it on entry or for a visa, case by case: check Before you go › Entry, with your passport.
  • Subscribe: the named certificate arrives by e-mail on payment, with your name, dates and limits (EUR 1.5M medical expenses, unlimited evacuation and repatriation) — the ones consulates check.
  • Attach it to the visa file; if in doubt about the format, write to us.

Six steps, in this order.

  • 2. Ask for a hospital in the Maximum network (art. 6.9).

Is an Amex, Visa or Mastercard enough in Syria?

At today's level 4/4, card by card:

  • Amex Platinum — Your Amex Platinum expressly excludes this trip: the T&Cs rule out travel to countries your government has advised against visiting.
  • Visa — Your Visa may not cover here: the notice excludes the consequences of war, notorious political instability and terrorism — precisely the risks of an advised-against area.
  • Mastercard — Your Mastercard World Elite expressly excludes this trip: areas 'formally advised against' by the French foreign ministry are ruled out, assessed at departure date.
  • Three lines to read in your notice: the duration (often 90 days per trip), the settlement (reimbursement afterwards or direct payment of the hospital) and the area exclusion at level 4/4.

Are a health plan or a travel policy enough in Syria?

A health plan reimburses at home; here, the hospital asks for a payment guarantee before admission.

  • Health plan — A health plan treats you at home. Here the hospital asks for a guarantee before admission — not a later reimbursement.
  • Travel policy — The clause is a market standard: the reference policy excludes trips to areas 'formally advised against by government authorities' — at this level most classic policies no longer cover.
  • A travel policy often has a territorial clause at level 4/4 and a 90-day limit per trip.
  • Have your IPID number or the PDF of the terms and ask an expert to call you back: the answer is in the document, not in the brochure.

How do I use the medical network on this page?

The page reads hospitals, pharmacies and doctors from OpenStreetMap, around the point you choose.

  • Type your city, hotel or beach: the map re-centres, 24/7 emergency rooms come first.
  • Each row gives the phone when the source publishes it, the nearest street, directions and the Google Maps listing.
  • The PDF briefing repeats the same places, numbered on a printable map.
  • No customer reviews: OpenStreetMap has none, and we invent none.

Which vaccines and health precautions for Syria?

The sourced detail is under Medical network › Health: vaccines, diseases present, altitude, outbreaks.

  • CDC (Travelers' Health), depending on the trip: Routine vaccines, COVID-19, Cholera, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Measles, Monkeypox.
  • France Diplomatie reports in the country: malaria — mosquito protection day and night.
  • See a doctor or a travel clinic 8 weeks before departure (Foreign Office).
  • Carry your medicines in their packaging, with a prescription using international non-proprietary names (France Diplomatie).

Can I be treated in Syria, or will I be evacuated?

1.5 physicians per 1,000 people (2021) versus 4.5 in Switzerland.

  • 1.4 hospital beds per 1,000 people versus 4.4 in Switzerland (World Bank).
  • With 1.5 physicians per 1,000 people (67% fewer than Switzerland), the nearest hospital does not always have the capacity for a serious case: evacuation to an adequate centre is the rule, not the exception — that is what unlimited evacuation and repatriation cover. Health spending of 33 USD per person (Switzerland: 11,784) goes with private hospitals that bill foreigners in hard currency and ask for a guarantee before admission: the direct payment guarantee is what avoids the deposit.
  • When the local facility is not enough, Maximum's medical team decides the evacuation to a suitable centre, and pays for it (art. 6.2.2).

Syria: safety, in figures?

Comparable figures (homicides, roads, incidents) are under Safety & risks › Incidents.

  • 14.9 road deaths per 100,000 people versus 2.2 in Switzerland (World Bank, WHO).
  • UCDP (Uppsala University): 35 geolocated violent incidents, 79 deaths over the last closed period, each placed on the map.
  • On the road, 7 times more deaths than in Switzerland: road crashes are the leading cause of death of healthy travellers (CDC) — seat belt, no night driving, a driver or a taxi from a rank.
