How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

The official advice, in full

Source: France Diplomatie (health advice, in French).

In brief
  • Consult your doctor or an international vaccination centre well before departure to assess your health and receive vaccination recommendations. France Diplomatie
  • Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory and must be administered at an approved centre; authorities may request your vaccination certificate at the border. France Diplomatie
  • Carry medications only in original packaging with original labels, accompanied by a prescription listing drugs by international non-proprietary name; verify authorisation in your destination country. France Diplomatie
  • Meningitis ACWY vaccination is recommended if travelling during the dry season (usually winter and spring) or if an epidemic is reported. France Diplomatie
  • Drink only bottled or encapsulated beverages and water made potable through filtration, boiling, or disinfectant; avoid raw or undercooked food and cold buffets. France Diplomatie

  • Hépatite A : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Fièvre typhoïde : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Méningite ACWY en cas de séjour pendant la saison sèche (habituellement hiver et printemps) ou d’épidémie signalée ;
  • T uberculose : chez les enfants de moins de 15 ans en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Hépatite B : en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Rage : notamment enfants en bas âge, séjour en milieu rural ou éloigné des villes principales ;
  • Chikungunya : en cas d’épidémie ou de séjour prolongé ;
  • Dengue : en cas d’épidémie active ou de séjour prolongé en zone endémique ;

Hépatite A

  • Porter des vêtements longs et couvrants ;
  • Appliquer des produits répulsifs cutanés sur les zones découvertes du corps ;
  • Protéger son logement (moustiquaires imprégnées d’insecticide, diffuseurs électriques, serpentins à l’extérieur, climatisation, etc.) ;

  • Se laver les mains régulièrement avec de l’eau et du savon ou des solutions de lavage hydroalcooliques, surtout avant et après les repas et le passage aux toilettes ;
  • Veiller à la qualité des aliments et surtout à leur bonne cuisson ;
  • Éviter la consommation de produits alimentaires (poisson, viande, volaille, lait) crus ou peu cuits ;
  • Peler les fruits et légumes ou les laver soigneusement (à l’eau saine) ;
  • Éviter les crudités, coquillages, plats réchauffés et buffets froids ;

Health — Foreign Office

Before you travel check that:

  • your destination can provide the healthcare you may need
  • you have appropriate travel insurance for local treatment or unexpected medical evacuation

This is particularly important if you have a health condition or are pregnant.

Emergency medical number

Call 18 from Ouagadougou and ask for an ambulance.

Outside Ouagadougou, call the universal emergency number 112.

If you get no response, you will need to get local advice about the closest hospital and how to get to it.

Contact your insurance company quickly if you’re referred to a medical facility for treatment.

Vaccine recommendations and health risks

At least 8 weeks before your trip:

  • check the latest vaccine recommendations for Burkina Faso
  • see where to get vaccines and whether you have to pay on the NHS travel vaccinations page

See what health risks you’ll face in Burkina Faso including:

  • yellow fever
  • Zika virus
  • dengue and malaria

Updated 03.05.2026

Do not travel to Burkina Faso for any reason due to crime , kidnapping , terrorism , and health .

Do not travel to Burkina Faso for any reason.

U.S. government employee travel restrictions

U.S. government employees working in Burkina Faso are not allowed to travel outside of Ouagadougou due to safety risks. Personnel are discouraged from nighttime travel to the Balkiui and Rayongo (also known as Dayongo) neighborhoods of Ouagadougou’s Arrondissement 11.

Americans in Burkina Faso are strongly advised to take the same precautions.

Crime

State of Emergency

Violent crime is common throughout Burkina Faso. Crimes include kidnapping, assault, armed robbery, home invasion, and carjacking especially during local holidays and seasonal events.

Roadblocks, including those set up by armed groups, occur throughout the country. In urban areas, police checkpoints may also be present, particularly at night. In addition, highways across the country are frequently the scene of attacks on government, civilian, and commercial targets.

Local authorities may not recognize travelers with dual nationality. Your U.S. nationality may not be recognized if you are also a national of Burkina Faso. Review our information on Dual Nationality .

The Government of Burkina Faso has declared a state of emergency in the following territories:

  • The entire Sahel and East regions
  • The provinces of Kossi and Sourou (Boucle de Mouhoun region)
  • The province of Kenedougou (Hauts Bassins region)
  • The province of Loroum (North region)
  • The province of Koulpelogo (Center-East region)

Kidnapping

  • The threat of kidnapping of Westerners by criminal or terrorist groups remains high throughout the region in Burkina Faso. This includes Ouagadougou and especially in the Sahel and East Regions. Extortion and kidnapping for ransom are big sources of financing for terrorist and criminal groups.

Terrorism

There is risk of terrorist violence, including terrorist attacks and other activity in Burkina Faso. Visit the U.S. Department of State's country reports on terrorism to learn more.

Terrorist organizations continue to plan and conduct terrorist activities throughout Burkina Faso. Terrorists and armed groups target foreigners to kidnap for ransom.

Terrorists may attack without warning:

  • Spots frequented by foreigners anywhere in the country
  • Police stations
  • Customs offices

  • éviter de circuler à pied ou à cyclomoteur, de manière isolée ou après le coucher du soleil ;
  • regagner si possible les véhicules en groupe et raccompagner les piétons ;
  • dissimuler les sacs, surtout lorsqu’on circule sur un deux-roues et éviter le port du sac à dos ;
  • éviter de sortir le soir avec des sacs à main faciles à arracher, limiter leur contenu au strict minimum ;
  • éviter de conserver passeport, espèces et carte bancaire dans le même sac ;
  • se montrer discret en manipulant son portefeuille dans les lieux publics ;
  • éviter les guichets bancaires à la nuit tombée ;
  • éviter les kiosques « Orange Money » à la nuit tombée, et en journée rester attentif à l’environnement ou avoir recours à des intermédiaires ;
  • si l’on doit manipuler de fortes sommes, rester discret et limiter le nombre de personnes informées ;

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad .

Terrorism in Burkina Faso

Terrorists are very likely to try to carry out attacks in Burkina Faso.

Several terrorist groups operate in Burkina Faso, including Jama’a Nusrat ul-Islam wa al-Muslimin (JNIM) and Islamic State.

There is a high threat from terrorism throughout the country, including increasingly in the capital, Ouagadougou. Terrorist attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places frequented by foreign nationals, such as:

  • diplomatic premises
  • conference centres
  • tourist sites
  • sporting and cultural events including music festivals
  • shopping centres
  • major roads and transport hubs
  • religious sites and places of worship, particularly churches
  • national parks and nature reserves
  • foreign, national or local government buildings
  • large crowds

There may be a heightened risk of attack during festivals, and religious and public holiday periods. Stay aware of your surroundings, keep up to date with local media reports and follow the advice of the local authorities.

There are frequent attacks across Burkina Faso, particularly close to the borders with Mali, Niger and Côte d’Ivoire and in the eastern region.

See also road safety

Examples of significant attacks include:

  • in August 2024, at least 400 people were killed in a village attack in Barsalogho, Sanmatenga
  • in July 2024, the office of Doctors Without Borders (MSF) was attacked by gunfire in Djibo, Sahel
  • in February 2024, at least 15 people were killed in an attack on a church in Essakane, Oudalan
  • in February 2024, at least 12 people were killed in an attack on a mosque in Natiaboani, Gourma
  • in 2023, two foreign nationals were killed in an attack on a commercial truck convoy on the N3 (near Diori), Sahel
  • in 2023, around 20 people were killed in attacks on 6 villages in the southwest of Seytenga including Foufou, Mira and Lipsi
Terrorist kidnap

There’s a very high threat of kidnapping by Al-Qaeda and regional Islamic State-affiliated groups in Burkina Faso. These include Jamaat Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimeen (JNIM) and Islamic State Greater Sahara (ISGS ), who operate throughout Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso.

A number of foreign nationals have been kidnapped and killed in Burkina Faso in recent years, especially in the northeast of the country.

British nationals are seen as legitimate targets, including tourists, humanitarian aid workers, journalists and business travellers. If you are kidnapped, the reason for your presence is unlikely to protect you or secure your safe release.

If you’re working or travelling in Burkina Faso, you should be aware of the risk of terrorist kidnapping. You should maintain a high level of vigilance at all times, including when travelling. You should be particularly vigilant when walking in crowded public places, including camps for displaced people, religious gatherings and insecure spaces like places of worship, markets, shopping malls, hotels, bars, night clubs, restaurants, nature reserves and national parks, and transport hubs. You should avoid regular patterns of travel and aim to only travel during daylight hours.

If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in Burkina Faso, and if the applicable conditions are met, you may apply for the return of your child to the Burkinabe court. If you are in this situation:

  • act as quickly as you can

LGBT+ travellers

Same sex sexual activity and the ‘promotion’ of same-sex relationships is a criminal offence in Burkina Faso. If convicted, such charges could lead to prison sentences of up to 5 years. There is little to no public acceptance of LGBT+ people or identities in Burkina Faso. There is an increased risk of harassment or violence against anyone thought to be part of the LGBT+ community, or perceived to be supporting their rights. Read more advice for LGBT+ travellers.

There are strict customs regulations about taking cultural objects like masks, religious materials and antiquities out of Burkina Faso. If you’re unsure about buying any souvenirs you find for sale, contact the Ministry of Culture.

Money

A few of the larger hotels and restaurants in Ouagadougou accept credit cards. You’re unlikely to be able to use them anywhere outside the capital. There are a few ATMs in Ouagadougou, but they only accept Visa cards. The best option is to bring US dollars in cash to exchange.

Entry requirements — rules for a British passport

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK who choose to travel despite FCDO advice. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of Burkina Faso’s current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Burkina Faso set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Embassy of Burkina Faso in Brussels .

Passport validity requirements

Your passport must be valid for the duration of your stay and have 2 blank pages for entry stamps.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement . See Dual Citizenship .

Visa requirements

You must have a visa to enter Burkina Faso.

Applying for a visa

If you live in the UK, apply for a visa online or through the Embassy of Burkina Faso in Brussels . You cannot get a visa for Burkina Faso in the UK.

There are Burkinabe embassies in the West Africa region, including in Accra and Abidjan.

Vaccine requirements

To pass border control in Burkina Faso, you must have a certificate to prove you’ve had a yellow fever vaccination, due to a risk of yellow fever transmission.

For more details about health entry requirements and recommended vaccinations see TravelHealthPro’s Burkina Faso guide .

Are a health plan or a travel policy enough in Burkina Faso?

A health plan reimburses at home; here, the hospital asks for a payment guarantee before admission.

  • Health plan — A health plan treats you at home. Here the hospital asks for a guarantee before admission — not a later reimbursement.
  • Travel policy — The clause is a market standard: the reference policy excludes trips to areas 'formally advised against by government authorities' — at this level most classic policies no longer cover.
  • A travel policy often has a territorial clause at level 4/4 and a 90-day limit per trip.

  • With 0.1 physicians per 1,000 people (98% fewer than Switzerland), the nearest hospital does not always have the capacity for a serious case: evacuation to an adequate centre is the rule, not the exception — that is what unlimited evacuation and repatriation cover. Health spending of 72 USD per person (Switzerland: 11,784) goes with private hospitals that bill foreigners in hard currency and ask for a guarantee before admission: the direct payment guarantee is what avoids the deposit.
  • When the local facility is not enough, Maximum's medical team decides the evacuation to a suitable centre, and pays for it (art. 6.2.2).

Burkina Faso: safety, in figures?

1.2 homicides per 100,000 people (2017) versus 0.6 in Switzerland and 1.3 in France.

  • 31.0 road deaths per 100,000 people versus 2.2 in Switzerland (World Bank, WHO).
  • UCDP (Uppsala University): 153 geolocated violent incidents, 774 deaths over the last closed period, each placed on the map.
  • The homicide rate is above Switzerland's, without being out of range. On the road, 14 times more deaths than in Switzerland: road crashes are the leading cause of death of healthy travellers (CDC) — seat belt, no night driving, a driver or a taxi from a rank.

Travelling to Ouagadougou: what changes

The published advisory level is national, but risk is not: business hubs (Ouagadougou) do not share the profile of border areas. The medical network shown on this page is computed around Ouagadougou — real hospitals, evacuation airport and live alerts. Before a specific trip, always cross-check your country of residence's advisory: that is what your policy cites.

Same advisory level: Sudan · South Sudan · Syria · Chad · Ukraine · Yemen

Cross-check with official sources

The displayed level comes from the State Department, checked every morning. Before departure, always cross-check your country of residence's advisory: that is what your policy cites.

The level shown is the official U.S. Department of State level, checked daily. Maximum Insurance is an insurance distributor — general information, not personal advice.
