How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

The official advice, in full

Source: France Diplomatie (health advice, in French).

In brief
  • French nationals should consult their doctor or an international vaccination centre for health advice and vaccinations, and check if their medications are permitted in Chad.
  • Ensure all French vaccinations are up-to-date, including those for diphtheria, tetanus, polio, whooping cough, and measles; a vaccination record may be requested upon arrival.
  • Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory, and COVID-19 vaccination is recommended; consult a doctor for advice on other potential vaccinations like Hepatitis A, typhoid, and rabies.
  • To prevent mosquito-borne illnesses like Chikungunya and Dengue, wear long clothing, use insect repellent, protect your accommodation, and eliminate stagnant water sources.
  • Avoid contact with fresh water in Chad to prevent Bilharzia, and practice strict food and water hygiene to avoid cholera, such as drinking only boiled or bottled water.
  • British nationals should check healthcare availability and ensure they have adequate travel insurance for local treatment or medical evacuation, as medical facilities in Chad are poor.

  • Coronavirus : il est recommandé de disposer d’un parcours vaccinal complet contre le SARS-Cov2 (COVID-19). Le vaccin Pfizer de BionTech est disponible localement et peut-être administré à l’Hôpital de la Renaissance ;
  • Fièvre jaune : la vaccination contre la fièvre jaune, dont des cas ont été déclarés en 2021, est obligatoire (à pratiquer dans un centre agréé) ;
  • Hépatite A : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Fièvre typhoïde : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Hépatite B : en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Méningite ACWY : en cas de séjour pendant la saison sèche (habituellement hiver et printemps) ou d’épidémie signalée ;
  • Tuberculose : chez les enfants de moins de 15 ans en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Rage : notamment enfants en bas âge, séjour en milieu rural ou éloigné des villes principales ;
  • Chikungunya : en cas d’épidémie ou de séjour prolongé ;
  • Dengue : en cas d’épidémie active ou de séjour prolongé en zone endémique ;

  • Porter des vêtements longs et couvrants ;
  • Appliquer des produits répulsifs cutanés sur les zones découvertes du corps ;
  • Protéger son logement (moustiquaires imprégnées d’insecticide, diffuseurs électriques, serpentins à l’extérieur, climatisation, etc.) ;

  • Se laver les mains régulièrement avec de l’eau et du savon ou des solutions de lavage hydroalcooliques, surtout avant et après les repas et le passage aux toilettes ;
  • Veiller à la qualité des aliments et surtout à leur bonne cuisson ;
  • Éviter la consommation de produits alimentaires (poisson, viande, volaille, lait) crus ou peu cuits ;
  • Peler les fruits et légumes ou les laver soigneusement (à l’eau saine) ;
  • Éviter les crudités, coquillages, plats réchauffés et buffets froids ;

Chad - Level 4: Do Not TravelState Department ↗updated 27.04.2026 · read 13.10.2026

Updated 27.04.2026

Do not travel in Chad for any reason due to risk of crime , terrorism , unrest , inadequate health infrastructure, kidnapping , and landmines .

Outside of N’Djamena, the U.S. government has extremely limited ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in Chad. U.S. government employees working in Chad need special authorization to travel outside of the capital due to safety risks. Embassy N’Djamena has implemented in-city restrictions for U.S. government employees, to include limits on areas acceptable for night driving and requirements for mandatory armored vehicle use.

Crime

Both violent and petty crime are a real danger in Chad. Violent crimes include muggings, purse snatching, armed robbery, home invasion, carjacking, and sexual assault. Common petty crime includes pickpocketing. Both visitors and residents face these threats.

  • Limited resources and inadequate law enforcement training hinder police response to serious crime in most areas.

Terrorism

There is risk of terrorist violence, including terrorist attacks and other activity in Chad. Visit the U.S. Department of State's country reports on terrorism to learn more.

Terrorist groups have targeted:

  • Religious venues
  • Schools
  • Government buildings
  • Police stations
  • Transportation hubs
  • Markets
  • Areas visited by tourists, including national parks
  • These attacks have resulted in the deaths of Chadians as well as foreign visitors. Americans should remain alert and avoid large public gatherings.

Unrest

  • Protests can happen without warning. They often develop around special events or political issues like elections. When protests, strikes, and demonstrations escalate, security services have responded with force, deploying batons, rubber bullets, tear gas, and gunfire to disperse crowds.

Health

  • Medical services in Chad are extremely limited. Access to routine and emergency medical treatment is often unavailable. There is limited access to medicines, including antibiotics. All medical services, from treatment for a minor health issue to one requiring medical evacuation, are at your expense. If you purchase additional medical insurance, be sure to keep records of all medical services paid for and provided.

Kidnapping

  • Kidnapping for ransom is common in Chad. Criminal groups and terrorist organizations target both locals and foreign visitors.

  • faire connaître à des personnes de confiance les dates, horaires, parcours, destination et conditions du déplacement ;
  • s’inscrire sur fil d’Ariane et communiquer au moins un numéro de téléphone pour pouvoir être joint en permanence ;
  • préparer son déplacement en établissant des contacts préalables avec des interlocuteurs connaissant la région ;
  • se faire connaître à l’arrivée auprès des autorités locales ;

  • se renseigner sur l’état des routes et sur les conditions de sécurité sur le parcours et sur le lieu de destination ;

  • avoir sur soi la carte d’inscription consulaire et une photocopie de son passeport (page du visa valide incluse) ;
  • éviter de se déplacer avec des objets de valeur et d’importantes sommes d’argent ;
  • éviter les déplacements à pied, même sur de courtes distances dans les quartiers périphériques de N’Djamena ;
  • prévenir quelqu’un si son déplacement est inhabituel ou dans des zones peu fréquentées par des expatriés ;
  • privilégier les déplacements en groupe ;
  • circuler en voiture portières et vitres fermées ;
  • proscrire l’usage des motos-taxis, appelées « clando men », dont la conduite est dangereuse et qui sont régulièrement la cible de malfaiteurs ;

Regional risks — Foreign Office

This section has safety advice for regions of Chad. It only covers regions where FCDO has specific advice.

You should also read FCDO ’s overall travel advice and safety and security advice .

Borkou, Ennedi Ouest, Ennedi Est and Tibesti provinces

FCDO advises against all travel to the northern provinces of Chad:

  • Borkou Province
  • Ennedi Ouest Province
  • Ennedi Est Province
  • Tibesti Province

There are many landmines near the Chad-Libya border in these provinces. The northern provinces are also unsafe due to the presence of rebel groups and contested gold mines.

Kanem Province, including Nokou

FCDO advises against all travel to the western part of Kanem Province, including the town of Nokou due to the risk of terrorism. See Terrorism in Chad .

Lake Chad region

FCDO advises against all travel to the Lake Chad region. There is a high risk of terrorist kidnapping in the Lake Chad region. See Terrorism in Chad .

Within 30km of all Chad’s other borders

FCDO advises against all travel to within 30km of all of Chad’s other borders.

The Chad-Sudan border is closed to travellers, with limited humanitarian exceptions. The Government of Chad closed the border on 23 February 2026 following repeated cross-border incidents linked to the conflict in Sudan. Since late 2025, there has been increased insecurity along the eastern border, including armed clashes and reports of aerial attacks near towns such as Tiné.

The Central African Republic is unstable and the border area is highly insecure, with limited government presence and active armed groups. In 2021, armed groups reportedly entered south-western Chad from the Central African Republic before Chadian forces repelled them. Chadian rebel groups remain active and could launch attacks in Chad without warning.

The rest of Chad

FCDO advises against all but essential travel to the rest of Chad, including the capital, N’Djamena.

In 2021 and 2022 protesters and security forces clashed violently in N’Djamena and southern Chad. A number of people were killed.

The Sahel region

There is a high risk of terrorist kidnapping in the Sahel region, which includes Chad, Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger. See Terrorism in Chad .

Safety — Foreign OfficeForeign Office ↗updated 06.08.2026 · read 13.10.2026

Safety — Foreign Office

This guide also has safety advice for regions of Chad .

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad .

Terrorism in Chad

Terrorists are very likely to try to carry out attacks in Chad.

Terrorist attacks could be indiscriminate and occur without warning, including in places visited by foreign nationals, such as:

  • hotels, restaurants, bars and nightclubs
  • shopping areas and markets
  • airports and other transport hubs
  • places of worship (especially churches)
  • national parks
  • foreign embassies and other diplomatic or military facilities
  • national and local government facilities

Stay aware of your surroundings, keep up to date with local media reports and follow the advice of local authorities. Avoid all large gatherings, including:

  • music festivals
  • shows and concerts
  • sporting events
  • public marches and demonstrations

Be extra cautious during elections, festivities, and religious and public holidays.

The terrorist groups Islamic State West Africa and Boko Haram remain active in the Lake Chad region. In an attack in 2022, Boko Haram killed at least 30 Chadian soldiers near Baga Sola, Lac Province. A state of emergency is in place in the Lac and Kanem provinces with Chadian security forces conducting military operations. In October 2024, at least 40 soldiers were killed in an attack by Boko Haram on a Chadian military base in Barkaram, Lake Chad region.

Terrorist kidnapping

There is a high risk of terrorist kidnapping in the Lake Chad Basin and the border areas with Cameroon, Sudan and the Central African Republic.

British nationals are seen as legitimate targets, including tourists, humanitarian aid workers, journalists and business travellers. If you are kidnapped, the reason for your presence is unlikely to protect you or secure your safe release.

There is also a high risk of terrorist kidnapping in the Sahel region, which includes Chad, Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger and Mali. Over the last 10 years, terrorist groups in the Sahel have kidnapped western nationals, including tourists, non-governmental organisation (NGO) workers and diplomats, and are still holding several hostages. Kidnappers have killed some hostages, including several British nationals.

Terrorist groups active in the Lake Chad Basin and the Sahel region include Jamaat Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimeen ( JNIM ), Islamic State West Africa ( ISWA ), Islamic State Greater Sahara (ISGS), Al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), Al Murabitoun, Ansar Dine and Boko Haram. These groups can carry out attacks and kidnappings over long distances. Boko Haram and ISWA also take hostages from neighbouring Cameroon, northern Nigeria and the Diffa region of Niger. Kidnapping for ransom is the main source of finance for JNIM . Criminal gangs also carry out kidnappings for terrorist groups in return for financial rewards.

You should always stay alert, especially when travelling and in crowded public places, including camps for displaced people, religious gatherings and insecure spaces such as places of worship, markets, shopping areas, hotels, bars, nightclubs, restaurants and transport hubs. Make sure you have carefully considered the threat and have reasonable,…

Terrorist groups have targeted:

  • Religious venues

  • Transportation hubs
  • Markets
  • Areas visited by tourists, including national parks

What are the entry requirements for Chad with my passport?

The rules depend on the passport, not on the destination alone.

  • French passport (France Diplomatie): All COVID-19 health restrictions for entering Chad have been lifted. A visa is required to enter Chad and must be obtained from a Chadian diplomatic or consular representation before arrival. No Chadian visas can be issued at the border.
  • British passport (Foreign Office): British citizens must ensure their passport is valid for at least six months beyond their arrival date in Chad. A visa is required for all visits to Chad; contact the Chadian Embassy in Belgium or France for application details. Visitors staying longer than 72 hours must register with the police at the Commissariat Central, bringing a passport photograph.
  • American passport: the requirements are on the State Department country page (travel.state.gov).
  • Swiss passport: the FDFA refers you to the destination's embassy in Switzerland.
  • Pick your passport at the top of Before you go › Entry: the official text that concerns you comes first, with its “In brief” summary.

For a Schengen visa, yes: at least €30,000 of travel medical insurance (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, art. 15).

  • Many other countries ask for it on entry or for a visa, case by case: check Before you go › Entry, with your passport.
  • Subscribe: the named certificate arrives by e-mail on payment, with your name, dates and limits (CHF 1.5M medical expenses, unlimited evacuation and repatriation) — the ones consulates check.

Is an Amex, Visa or Mastercard enough in Chad?

At today's level 4/4, card by card:

  • Amex Platinum — Your Amex Platinum expressly excludes this trip: the T&Cs rule out travel to countries your government has advised against visiting.
  • Visa — Your Visa may not cover here: the notice excludes the consequences of war, notorious political instability and terrorism — precisely the risks of an advised-against area.
  • Mastercard — Your Mastercard World Elite expressly excludes this trip: areas 'formally advised against' by the French foreign ministry are ruled out, assessed at departure date.
  • Three lines to read in your notice: the duration (often 90 days per trip), the settlement (reimbursement afterwards or direct payment of the hospital) and the area exclusion at level 4/4.

Are a health plan or a travel policy enough in Chad?

A health plan reimburses at home; here, the hospital asks for a payment guarantee before admission.

  • Health plan — A health plan treats you at home. Here the hospital asks for a guarantee before admission — not a later reimbursement.
  • Travel policy — The clause is a market standard: the reference policy excludes trips to areas 'formally advised against by government authorities' — at this level most classic policies no longer cover.
  • A travel policy often has a territorial clause at level 4/4 and a 90-day limit per trip.
  • Have your IPID number or the PDF of the terms and ask an expert to call you back: the answer is in the document, not in the brochure.

What Maximum knows

The 207 country pages — hospitals, pharmacies, police, embassies, emergency numbers, official advice from four governments, health, safety in figures, events in progress — read around the city you name. Your policy — benefits, the six steps, claims, articles. The site — prices, certificate, subscription. Nothing else: what it does not know, it says so and hands you to an adviser.

Travelling to N'Djaména: what changes

The published advisory level is national, but risk is not: business hubs (N'Djaména) do not share the profile of border areas. The medical network shown on this page is computed around N'Djamena — real hospitals, evacuation airport and live alerts. Before a specific trip, always cross-check your country of residence's advisory: that is what your policy cites.

Same advisory level: Belarus · Burkina Faso · DR Congo · North Korea · Haiti · Iraq

Cross-check with official sources
U.S. State Department → UK FCDO → France Diplomatie → DFAE (Suisse) →

The displayed level comes from the State Department, checked every morning. Before departure, always cross-check your country of residence's advisory: that is what your policy cites.

The level shown is the official U.S. Department of State level, checked daily. Maximum Insurance is an insurance distributor — general information, not personal advice.
