How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

Recommended vaccines and medicines10

Routine vaccinesCDC ↗

Make sure you are up-to-date on all routine vaccines before every trip. Some of these vaccines include Chickenpox (Varicella) Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis (DTaP, Tdap, or Td) Flu (influenza) Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) Polio Shingles

COVID-19CDC ↗

All eligible travelers should be up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines. Please see  Your COVID-19 Vaccination  for more information.

Hepatitis ACDC ↗

Consider hepatitis A vaccination for most travelers. It is recommended for travelers who will be doing higher risk activities, such as visiting smaller cities, villages, or rural areas where a traveler might get infected through food or water. It is recommended for travelers who plan on eating street food.

Hepatitis BCDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers younger than 60 years old traveling to the United Kingdom. Unvaccinated travelers 60 years and older may get vaccinated before traveling to the United Kingdom.

MeaslesCDC ↗

Cases of measles are on the rise worldwide. Travelers are at risk of measles if they have not been fully vaccinated at least two weeks prior to departure, or have not had measles in the past, and travel internationally to areas where measles is spreading.

MonkeypoxCDC ↗

Monkeypox vaccination is recommended for any adult who anticipates any of the following activities during travel: Sexual or intimate contact with a new partner Sexual or intimate contact at a commercial sex venue, like a sex club or bathhouse Sexual or intimate contact in exchange for money, goods, drugs, or other trade Sexual or intimate contact in association with a large public event, such as a rave, party, or…

PolioCDC ↗

In the United Kingdom, poliovirus has been identified in the past year. Travelers to the United Kingdom are at increased risk of exposure to poliovirus.

RabiesCDC ↗

Dogs infected with rabies are not commonly found in the United Kingdom. If rabies exposures occur while in the United Kingdom, rabies vaccines are typically available throughout most of the country.

Tick-borne EncephalitisCDC ↗

Avoid bug bites Learn more about tick-borne encephalitis at your destination .

Yellow FeverCDC ↗

CDC recommendations: Vaccine is not recommended. Country entry requirements: Vaccine is not required. Updated April 23, 2025

The official advice, in full

Source: France Diplomatie (health advice, in French).

In brief
  • French nationals should consult their GP or an international vaccination centre to assess health risks and receive travel-specific medical advice, including recommended vaccinations, before departure. France Diplomatie
  • Carry only essential medications in original packaging with original labels and an accompanying prescription in international non-proprietary names; verify legality of all medications in the destination country before travel. France Diplomatie
  • Ensure routine French vaccinations (diphtheria, tetanus, polio, whooping cough, measles) are up to date; the vaccination record may be requested upon entry in some countries. France Diplomatie
  • Consider TBE vaccination if travelling to rural or forested areas, as the disease is transmitted by tick bites and has no curative treatment; prevention relies on vaccination and tick bite protection. France Diplomatie

  • Porter des vêtements longs et couvrants ;
  • Appliquer des produits répulsifs cutanés sur les zones découvertes du corps ;
  • Protéger son logement (moustiquaires imprégnées d’insecticide, diffuseurs électriques, serpentins à l’extérieur, climatisation, etc.) ;

  • d’appliquer les recommandations des autorités : ne jamais laisser de bagages sans surveillance et signaler tout comportement ou objet suspect ;
  • de faire preuve d’une grande vigilance dans les transports publics et les sites touristiques les plus fréquentés ainsi que lors des évènements publics d’ampleur (évènements sportifs , rassemblements politiques…) ;

  • de ne pas faire étalage de bijoux, liquidités ou documents d’identité, notamment dans les zones touristiques, les lieux les plus fréquentés et les grandes villes ;
  • de privilégier les trottoirs à contresens de la circulation (cas de vol à la tire par des conducteurs de scooters) ;

  • 48 km/h sur voies urbaines ;
  • 96 km/h sur voies non urbaines ;

  • à pied, d’être particulièrement vigilant lors de la traversée des voies et grands axes et de développer le réflexe de regarder d’abord à droite puis à gauche ;

  • D’enregistrer dans son téléphone les numéros d’urgence : 999 (urgence absolue, contact avec la police et les autres services de secours, le 112 fonctionne également), 101 (contact avec la police hors urgence), 111 (conseils médicaux gratuits par téléphone (NHS) ;

British Transport Police: Don’t let them pocket it Police.uk

Natural hazards

Local laws

You must abide by local laws. Learn about what you should do and how we can help if you are arrested or detained abroad.

Drugs

Penalties for possession, use or trafficking of illegal drugs, including cannabis, are severe. Convicted offenders can expect prison sentences and heavy fines. Drugs, alcohol and travel

Banned and restricted goods

It is illegal to carry, purchase, sell or enter the country with certain types of knives. It is also illegal to bring into the country:

  • pepper spray
  • personal imports of meat and dairy products from most non-European Union countries

Convicted offenders can expect heavy fines and jail sentences.

International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. The convention applies between Canada and the United Kingdom. If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in the United Kingdom, and if the applicable conditions are met, you may apply for the return of your child to the British court. If you are in this situation:

  • act as quickly as you can
  • contact the Central Authority for your province or territory of residence for information on starting an application under The Hague Convention
  • consult a lawyer in Canada and in the United Kingdom to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
  • report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to the Vulnerable Children's Consular Unit at Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies. Be aware that Canadian consular officials cannot interfere in private legal matters or in another country's judicial affairs.

Driving

Traffic drives on the left. Parking in London and other major city centres is limited and expensive.

Driver's licence

You can drive with a valid Canadian licence for up to 12 months from your date of entry. Car rental companies may require an international driving permit, especially if your licence is not in English. Check with your car rental agency in advance.

Congestion Charge

If you drive into central London, you will be required to pay a daily congestion charge. The Congestion Charge zone is indicated by a large “C” painted on the roads and by signs. You can pay the fee by phone, online or at selected shops and gas stations.

Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ)

All boroughs in London are part of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ). If you drive in London, your vehicle must meet the ULEZ emission standards. If it does not, you must pay a daily charge to drive within the ULEZ.

Money

The currency of the United Kingdom is the pound sterling (GBP). If you are carrying £10,000 or more, or the equivalent in other currencies, you must make a declaration to customs when you enter or leave the United Kingdom. It includes sums in:

  • banknotes and coins
  • bearer bonds
  • travellers’ cheques
  • cheques that are signed but not made out to a person or organization
  • money orders (Northern Ireland only)
  • gold coins, bullion or nuggets (Northern Ireland only)
  • prepaid cards (Northern Ireland only)

  • Munis d’une carte nationale d’identité, dont la validité couvre la durée du séjour, s’ils sont de nationalité française ou ressortissants d’un autre pays de l’Union européenne, de l’Espace économique européen ou de Suisse ;

  • transporter ces marchandises soi-même ;
Great Britain in your baggage - GOV.UK .

  • bière - 42 litres ;
  • vin tranquille ( c’est-à-dire, non pétillant) - 18 litres.

Peuvent également être apportés :

  • les spiritueux et autres liqueurs dont le degré d’alcool est supérieur à 22% - 4 litres ;

Pour plus d’informations (en anglais) : Bringing goods into the UK for personal use

Pour plus d’informations (en anglais) : Bringing goods into the UK for personal use : Arriving in Northern Ireland

What is the official risk level in United Kingdom today?

Level 2/4 — Exercise Increased Caution, U.S. Department of State, retrieved on 24 October 2026.

  • Is the whole country advised against? United States: no · France: no · Switzerland: no (reading of 24 October 2026).
  • Contractually, only an FDFA, FOPH or WHO advisory against the trip opens Module A (art. 18.1) — that is not the case today.
  • International medical cover, 24/7 number saved, and a read of the areas named under Safety & risks before booking the itinerary.
  • We check these sources every morning and e-mail you the day one changes (Alerts button).

Is the whole of United Kingdom advised against, or only some areas?

An area advised against does not rule out the country.

  • Official answers: United States: no · France: no · Switzerland: no.
  • Keep your country of residence's advisory on booking day and on departure day: that is what your policy's clauses cite.

What are the entry requirements for United Kingdom with my passport?

The rules depend on the passport, not on the destination alone.

  • French passport (France Diplomatie): French and EU travellers must hold a valid passport to enter the UK; only EU residents with settled or pre-settled status may use a valid national ID card until further notice. From 1 January 2021, French nationals can enter the UK without a visa for stays up to six months for tourism, visiting family or friends, or short business trips; a long-stay visa is required for work, study or settlement. Personal goods up to £390 (£270 if arriving by private plane or boat) may be brought into Great Britain duty-free; amounts above this must be declared and duties paid on the total value, not just the excess.
  • American passport: the requirements are on the State Department country page (travel.state.gov).
  • Swiss passport: the FDFA refers you to the destination's embassy in Switzerland.
  • Pick your passport at the top of Before you go › Entry: the official text that concerns you comes first, with its “In brief” summary.

Do I need an insurance certificate for a United Kingdom visa?

For a Schengen visa, yes: at least €30,000 of travel medical insurance (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, art. 15).

  • Many other countries ask for it on entry or for a visa, case by case: check Before you go › Entry, with your passport.
  • Subscribe: the named certificate arrives by e-mail on payment, with your name, dates and limits (EUR 1.5M medical expenses, unlimited evacuation and repatriation) — the ones consulates check.
  • Attach it to the visa file; if in doubt about the format, write to us.

  • Amex Platinum — No area exclusion at this level — but three written limits: deductible and prior approval, 90-day cap, advance under conditions.

  • Mastercard — No exclusion in play at this level — but a €155,000 cap and 90 covered days.

Are a health plan or a travel policy enough in United Kingdom?

A health plan reimburses at home; here, the hospital asks for a payment guarantee before admission.

  • Health plan — A health plan treats you at home. Here the hospital asks for a guarantee before admission — not a later reimbursement.
  • Travel policy — No area exclusion at this level — compare cap, deductible and covered duration.
  • A travel policy often has a territorial clause at level 4/4 and a 90-day limit per trip.
  • Have your IPID number or the PDF of the terms and ask an expert to call you back: the answer is in the document, not in the brochure.

Can I be treated in United Kingdom, or will I be evacuated?

3.3 physicians per 1,000 people (2023) versus 4.5 in Switzerland.

  • 2.4 hospital beds per 1,000 people versus 4.4 in Switzerland (World Bank).
  • With 3.3 physicians per 1,000 people (27% fewer than Switzerland), the nearest hospital does not always have the capacity for a serious case: evacuation to an adequate centre is the rule, not the exception — that is what unlimited evacuation and repatriation cover. Health spending of 5,860 USD per person (Switzerland: 11,784): expensive care, settled directly by the insurer with the payment guarantee.
  • When the local facility is not enough, Maximum's medical team decides the evacuation to a suitable centre, and pays for it (art. 6.2.2).

  • The homicide rate is above Switzerland's, without being out of range. On the road, a level close to Switzerland's; road crashes are the leading cause of death of healthy travellers (CDC) — seat belt, no night driving, a driver or a taxi from a rank.
