How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

Recommended vaccines and medicines9

Routine vaccinesCDC ↗

Make sure you are up-to-date on all routine vaccines before every trip. Some of these vaccines include Chickenpox (Varicella) Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis (DTaP, Tdap, or Td) Flu (influenza) Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) Polio Shingles

COVID-19CDC ↗

All eligible travelers should be up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines. Please see  Your COVID-19 Vaccination  for more information.

Hepatitis ACDC ↗

Consider hepatitis A vaccination for most travelers. It is recommended for travelers who will be doing higher risk activities, such as visiting smaller cities, villages, or rural areas where a traveler might get infected through food or water. It is recommended for travelers who plan on eating street food.

Hepatitis BCDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers younger than 60 years old traveling to Sweden. Unvaccinated travelers 60 years and older may get vaccinated before traveling to Sweden.

MeaslesCDC ↗

Cases of measles are on the rise worldwide. Travelers are at risk of measles if they have not been fully vaccinated at least two weeks prior to departure, or have not had measles in the past, and travel internationally to areas where measles is spreading.

MonkeypoxCDC ↗

Monkeypox vaccination is recommended for any adult who anticipates any of the following activities during travel: Sexual or intimate contact with a new partner Sexual or intimate contact at a commercial sex venue, like a sex club or bathhouse Sexual or intimate contact in exchange for money, goods, drugs, or other trade Sexual or intimate contact in association with a large public event, such as a rave, party, or…

RabiesCDC ↗

Dogs infected with rabies are not commonly found in Sweden. If rabies exposures occur while in Sweden, rabies vaccines are typically available throughout most of the country.

Tick-borne EncephalitisCDC ↗

For travelers moving or traveling to TBE-endemic areas TBE vaccine is recommended for persons who will have extensive exposure to ticks based on their planned outdoor activities and itinerary. TBE vaccine may be considered for persons who might engage in outdoor activities in areas ticks are likely to be found.

Yellow FeverCDC ↗

CDC recommendations: Vaccine is not recommended. Country entry requirements: Vaccine is not required. Updated April 23, 2025

CDC Travelers' Health, re-read weekly — the recommendation depends on your age, vaccines and itinerary: confirm it with a doctor or a travel clinic 4 to 6 weeks before departure.CDC ↗read 10.10.2026

The official advice, in full

Source: France Diplomatie (health advice, in French).

In brief
  • Consult your doctor or an international vaccination centre at least eight weeks before departure to assess your health and receive vaccination recommendations, particularly for diphtheria, tetanus, poliomyelitis, pertussis and measles. Foreign Office
  • Pack only strictly necessary medications in original packaging with original labels, accompanied by a prescription in international nonproprietary names (INN); verify these medications are authorised in Sweden before departure. France Diplomatie
  • Carry a European Health Insurance Card (GHIC or EHIC) to access medically necessary state healthcare in Sweden, but note this is not a substitute for travel insurance covering non-urgent treatment, repatriation and accommodation changes. Foreign Office
  • Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is transmitted by infected ticks primarily in spring and summer, with cases concentrated in central-southern Sweden between Stockholm and Göteborg; vaccination is recommended for rural or forested areas. France Diplomatie
  • In case of medical emergency, dial 112 and request an ambulance; contact your insurance or medical assistance company immediately if referred to a medical facility. Foreign Office
  • If taking regular medications, bring sufficient quantities; many countries restrict medicines containing narcotics or psychotropic substances, so consult the Swedish embassy or consulate before departure. DFAE

Health — Foreign Office

Before you travel check that:

  • your destination can provide the healthcare you may need
  • you have appropriate travel insurance for local treatment or unexpected medical evacuation

This is particularly important if you have a health condition or are pregnant.

Emergency medical number

Dial 112 and ask for an ambulance.

Contact your insurance or medical assistance company quickly if you’re referred to a medical facility for treatment.

If you’re visiting remote areas, consider how easily you will be able to access emergency services.

Vaccine recommendations and health risks

At least 8 weeks before your trip:

  • check the latest vaccine recommendations for Sweden
  • see where to get vaccines and whether you have to pay on the NHS travel vaccinations page

See what health risks you’ll face in Sweden , including:

  • biting insects and ticks
  • mpox – also see Sweden’s Public Health Authority website which includes updates on mpox
Medication

The legal status and regulation of some medicines prescribed or bought in the UK can be different in other countries.

Read best practice when travelling with medicines on TravelHealthPro .

Healthcare in Sweden

FCDO has a list of medical providers in Sweden where some staff will speak English.

Health insurance cards

To get medically necessary state healthcare in Sweden, you need a Global Health Insurance Card ( GHIC ) or a European Health Insurance Card ( EHIC ).

The NHS’s getting healthcare abroad webpage has details about:

  • how to apply for a GHIC
  • how to get temporary cover if you lose your card or it does not arrive in time
  • who qualifies for a new EHIC instead of a GHIC
  • what treatment counts as medically necessary

A GHIC or EHIC is not an alternative to travel insurance. You may have costs your GHIC or EHIC does not cover, including:

  • changes to travel and accommodation bookings
  • additional standard costs for treatment
  • medical repatriation to the UK
  • treatment that is ruled non-urgent
  • private healthcare
  • private clinics

There is also guidance on healthcare if you’re living in Sweden .

  • Consulter impérativement la météo avant le départ ;
  • Se munir de cartes locales et d’une lampe de poche ;
  • Signaler son départ et son itinéraire au refuge/hôtel de départ ;
  • Ne pas randonner seul ;

Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute: Fire Risk Swedish Civil Defence and Resilience Agency

If you are in this situation:

  • act as quickly as you can

Entry requirements — rules for a British passport

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of the current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Sweden set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Swedish Embassy in the UK .

Passport validity requirements

Sweden follows Schengen area rules . Your passport must:

- have a ‘date of issue’ less than 10 years before the date you arrive – if you renewed your passport before 1 October 2018, it might have a date of issue that is more than 10 years ago, making it invalid for entry to the Schengen area

- have an ‘expiry date’ at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen area (the expiry date does not need to be within 10 years of the date of issue)

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to .

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement . See Dual citizenship .

Visa requirements

You can travel without a visa to the Schengen area , which includes Sweden, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This applies if you travel:

  • as a tourist
  • to visit family or friends
  • to attend business meetings, cultural or sports events
  • for short-term studies or training

The requirements for working in Sweden are different.

If you’re travelling to other Schengen countries as well, make sure your whole visit is within the 90-day visa-free limit. Visits to Schengen countries in the 180 days before you travel count towards your 90 days. If you overstay the 90-day visa-free limit, you may be banned from entering Schengen countries for up to 3 years.

At Swedish border control, you may also need to:

  • show a return or onward ticket
  • show proof of your accommodation, for example, a hotel booking
  • show proof of your travel insurance
  • prove that you have enough money for your stay
Staying longer than 90 days in a 180-day period

To stay longer, you must meet the Swedish government’s entry requirements. Check which type of visa or work permit you need with the Swedish Embassy in the UK .

If you stay in Sweden with a residence permit or long-stay visa, this does not count towards your 90-day visa-free limit.

See entry processes if you live in Sweden .

Border controls on arrival from Denmark and Germany

Border controls are in place in Sweden for people travelling from Denmark via the Öresund crossing and arriving on ferries from Denmark and Germany.

New Schengen entry requirements

The European Union’s (EU) new Entry/Exit System (EES) is now being implemented across the Schengen area.

This means that when you travel into the Schengen area for short stays, you may need to register your biometric details, such as fingerprints and a photo. There is no cost for EES registration.

On your first visit into a Schengen country, you may be asked to…

What are the entry requirements for Sweden with my passport?

The rules depend on the passport, not on the destination alone.

  • French passport (France Diplomatie): French nationals may enter Sweden freely with a valid passport or national identity card, but a valid passport is strongly recommended to avoid travel disruptions. French national identity cards issued between 1 January 2004 and 31 December 2013 remain valid for five years after their expiry date, though no physical change indicates this extended validity. When travelling with only a national identity card, download and print the multilingual notice explaining the validity extension rules to present at borders.
  • British passport (Foreign Office): British passport holders must ensure their passport was issued less than ten years before arrival and expires at least three months after planned departure from the Schengen area. British citizens may stay visa-free in Sweden and the Schengen area for up to ninety days within any one hundred eighty-day period for tourism, visiting family, business meetings, or short-term studies. Overstaying the ninety-day visa-free limit in Schengen countries may result in a ban from entering Schengen countries for up to three years.
  • American passport: the requirements are on the State Department country page (travel.state.gov).
  • Swiss passport: the FDFA refers you to the destination's embassy in Switzerland.
  • Pick your passport at the top of Before you go › Entry: the official text that concerns you comes first, with its “In brief” summary.

Do I need an insurance certificate for a Sweden visa?

For a Schengen visa, yes: at least €30,000 of travel medical insurance (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, art. 15).

  • Many other countries ask for it on entry or for a visa, case by case: check Before you go › Entry, with your passport.
  • Subscribe: the named certificate arrives by e-mail on payment, with your name, dates and limits (EUR 1.5M medical expenses, unlimited evacuation and repatriation) — the ones consulates check.

Are a health plan or a travel policy enough in Sweden?

A health plan reimburses at home; here, the hospital asks for a payment guarantee before admission.

  • Health plan — A health plan treats you at home. Here the hospital asks for a guarantee before admission — not a later reimbursement.

What Maximum knows

The 207 country pages — hospitals, pharmacies, police, embassies, emergency numbers, official advice from four governments, health, safety in figures, events in progress — read around the city you name. Your policy — benefits, the six steps, claims, articles. The site — prices, certificate, subscription. Nothing else: what it does not know, it says so and hands you to an adviser.
