How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

Recommended vaccines and medicines10

Routine vaccinesCDC ↗

Make sure you are up-to-date on all routine vaccines before every trip. Some of these vaccines include Chickenpox (Varicella) Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis (DTaP, Tdap, or Td) Flu (influenza) Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) Polio Shingles

COVID-19CDC ↗

All eligible travelers should be up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines. Please see  Your COVID-19 Vaccination  for more information.

Hepatitis ACDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers one year old or older going to Mongolia. Infants 6 to 11 months old should also be vaccinated against Hepatitis A. The dose does not count toward the routine 2-dose series. Travelers allergic to a vaccine component should receive a single dose of immune globulin, which provides effective protection for up to 2 months depending on dosage given.

Hepatitis BCDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers of all ages traveling to Mongolia.

MeaslesCDC ↗

Cases of measles are on the rise worldwide. Travelers are at risk of measles if they have not been fully vaccinated at least two weeks prior to departure, or have not had measles in the past, and travel internationally to areas where measles is spreading.

MonkeypoxCDC ↗

Monkeypox vaccination is recommended for any adult who anticipates any of the following activities during travel: Sexual or intimate contact with a new partner Sexual or intimate contact at a commercial sex venue, like a sex club or bathhouse Sexual or intimate contact in exchange for money, goods, drugs, or other trade Sexual or intimate contact in association with a large public event, such as a rave, party, or…

RabiesCDC ↗

Dogs infected with rabies are commonly found in Mongolia. Rabies is also present in some terrestrial wildlife species. If rabies exposures occur while in Mongolia, rabies vaccines may only be available in larger suburban/urban medical facilities.

Tick-borne EncephalitisCDC ↗

For travelers moving or traveling to TBE-endemic areas TBE vaccine is recommended for persons who will have extensive exposure to ticks based on their planned outdoor activities and itinerary. TBE vaccine may be considered for persons who might engage in outdoor activities in areas ticks are likely to be found.

TyphoidCDC ↗

Consider getting a typhoid vaccine if you might: Travel to areas with poor sanitation and unsafe water, including rural areas Spend a long time in Mongolia, such as a month or more Visit friends or relatives Typhoid vaccine is not 100% effective. Practicing safe food and water habits , including washing hands at key times , can also help prevent typhoid fever .

The official advice, in full

Source: France Diplomatie (health advice, in French).

In brief
  • French nationals should consult a doctor or international vaccination center for health advice and necessary vaccinations before traveling abroad.
  • Carry essential medications in their original packaging with an international common name prescription, and verify their legality in the destination country.
  • Ensure all standard French vaccinations are up-to-date, including diphtheria, tetanus, polio, pertussis, and measles, as vaccination records may be requested.
  • Consider additional vaccinations like Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Hepatitis B, Tuberculosis, Rabies, and Tick-borne encephalitis based on travel duration and conditions.
  • British nationals travelling to Mongolia should ensure their travel insurance covers local treatment, unexpected medical evacuation, and repatriation.
  • Due to limited healthcare outside Ulaanbaatar and no reciprocal healthcare agreement, British nationals must pay 80% of treatment costs upfront and ensure comprehensive insurance coverage.

  • Hépatite A : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Fièvre typhoïde : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Hépatite B : en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Tuberculose : chez les enfants de moins de 15 ans en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Rage : notamment enfants en bas âge, séjour en milieu rural ou éloigné des villes principales ;

  • Se laver les mains régulièrement avec de l’eau et du savon ou des solutions de lavage hydroalcooliques, surtout avant et après les repas et le passage aux toilettes ;
  • Veiller à la qualité des aliments et surtout à leur bonne cuisson ;
  • Éviter la consommation de produits alimentaires (poisson, viande, volaille, lait) crus ou peu cuits ;
  • Peler les fruits et légumes ou les laver soigneusement (à l’eau saine) ;
  • Éviter les crudités, coquillages, plats réchauffés et buffets froids ;

Health — Foreign Office

Before you travel check that:

  • your destination can provide the healthcare you may need
  • you have appropriate travel insurance for local treatment or unexpected medical evacuation

This is particularly important if you have a health condition or are pregnant.

Emergency medical number

Call 103 and ask for an ambulance.

Contact your insurance company quickly if you’re referred to a medical facility for treatment.

Vaccine recommendations and health risks

At least 8 weeks before your trip:

  • check the latest vaccine recommendations for Mongolia
  • see where to get vaccines and whether you have to pay on the NHS travel vaccinations page

See what health risks you’ll face in Mongolia .

Altitude sickness is a risk in parts of Mongolia. Read more about altitude sickness on TravelHealthPro .

The high levels of air pollution in Ulaanbaatar, especially in winter, may aggravate bronchial, sinus or asthma conditions. Children, the elderly and those with pre-existing medical conditions may be especially affected. You can check the levels for Ulaanbaatar on the Real-time Air Quality Index .

Medication

The legal status and regulation of some medicines prescribed or bought in the UK can be different in other countries.

Read best practice when travelling with medicines on TravelHealthPro .

It is best to bring prescription medication and a first aid kit with you. Medical products in pharmacies are mainly from China and Russia, so you may not easily recognise what you need.

Healthcare in Mongolia

There are no reciprocal healthcare agreements between the UK and Mongolia, so you cannot get free healthcare in Mongolia.

If you are injured or become ill in a remote part of the country, it may be a long journey to the nearest medical facility. Outside Ulaanbaatar, the standard of healthcare is limited, and doctors may not speak English.

At hospitals, you will have to pay 80% of the treatment cost in advance. Make sure you have access to funds and that your insurance covers:

  • full medical expenses
  • an air ambulance, in case you need to be flown home
  • bringing a body home in the event of a death
  • bringing your family home, if one of you is seriously ill or injured

FCDO has a list of medical providers in Mongolia where some staff will speak English.

Swiss passport — FDFA (Switzerland), in French

In brief
  • Travel to Mongolia is generally considered safe, but avoid all demonstrations due to potential unrest and follow local authorities' directives.
  • Be aware of pickpocketing near tourist sites and crowded areas; violent assaults are a higher risk after dark.
  • When travelling outside of paved roads, use convoys of off-road vehicles, carry navigation tools, and sufficient supplies.
  • Extreme weather conditions, poor road quality, and limited infrastructure necessitate careful planning and experienced local guides for all excursions.
  • Be prepared for potential power and fuel shortages, and check with local authorities regarding temporary border crossing closures.

Faithful summary of the official texts below, which prevail.

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad .

Terrorism in Mongolia

Although there is no recent history of terrorism in Mongolia, attacks cannot be ruled out.

Political situation

There have been occasional instances of civil and political unrest resulting in protests. Avoid large gatherings and demonstrations for your personal safety.

Crime

Pickpockets may operate in markets and crowded public places. The risk increases during the festivals of Tsagaan Sar (New Year, celebrated from December to February) and Naadam (July). Take extra precautions during these periods.

Protecting yourself and your belongings

Occasionally large groups of people, including children and teenagers, harass pedestrians for money as they get into vehicles or walk into pubs or restaurants. Keep your mobile phone, passport and money in a secured bag on your person, and leave valuables in a hotel safe if possible.

Violent incidents are rare, but foreigners have been assaulted and robbed in Ulaanbaatar. Avoid being out alone at night, and ask hotels, restaurants or clubs to order a car for you. If hailing a ride, use only licensed taxis such as VIP Taxis. Alternatively use the taxi app UBCab, which is trackable.

Reporting crime

The Mongolian government has asked foreigners to report crimes so they can investigate and keep records. You do not need to have any further involvement and will be free to leave once you’ve made your report.

In an emergency call the police on 102 or +976 102 from an international mobile phone. There should be someone available on this number who can speak to you in English.

Personal ID

Always carry your passport. If the police ask you for ID they will not accept a copy and you could be fined. Keep copies of the photo page and the page with your Mongolian entry stamp in a separate place.

If you are a resident, carry your registration card.

Respecting religious customs

Show respect in Buddhist monasteries. Always ask for permission to take photographs and do not touch sacred images or objects.

Illegal drugs and prison sentences

It is illegal to possess or use any type of drugs, including cannabis. If you are found guilty of drug trafficking, you could face a life sentence. Mongolian prisons have very basic facilities.

Using cameras

It is illegal to photograph or video police, police escorts or military personnel. You could be arrested and fined. The court decides the fine based on the degree of social danger of the crime and the income of the defendant.

Entry requirements — rules for a British passport

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of Mongolia’s current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Mongolia set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Mongolian Embassy in the UK .

Passport validity requirements

To enter Mongolia, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the date you arrive.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement . See Dual citizenship .

Visa requirements

You can visit Mongolia for tourism purposes for up to 30 days without a visa until 31 December 2026.

Applying for a visa

To stay longer, to work or study, for business travel or for other reasons you must meet the Mongolian government’s entry requirements . For more details, contact the Mongolian Embassy in the UK .

Make sure you get your passport stamped.

Make sure the border control officer puts a stamp in your passport or you could face issues when leaving the country.

Travelling with children

Adults accompanying children other than their own should have a notarised letter from the parents or legal guardian to confirm the arrangement.

Vaccine requirements

For details about medical entry requirements and recommended vaccinations, see  TravelHealthPro’s Mongolia guide .

Registering with the authorities

Your hotel or landlord will register you using an app. If you are travelling independently or staying with friends, you must register yourself with the Mongolian Immigration Agency . You do not need to go in person.

The agency will issue you with a digital residence permit that shows your passport number, address, photograph and fingerprints. Always carry it when you are in Mongolia.

Borders with Mongolia

Mongolia takes border security very seriously and foreign nationals are not routinely allowed access to border areas. The authorities can regard zones of up to 100km inside the border as a border area. If you wish to travel in these areas, you must get permission from the State Frontier Guard Authority. Only a few specified land border crossings are open to foreigners.

Borders within Mongolia

There is currently a Foot and Mouth Disease outbreak in the western provinces of Khovd, Bayan-Ulgii, Govi-Altai and Selenge in Mongolia. Mongolian authorities are taking action to stop the outbreak spreading further but other Mongolian provinces could be affected at short notice. Monitor local media for the latest information.

Border points open to British citizens

There are normally 8 border points open to British passport holders:

  • Chinggis Khaan International Airport in Ulaanbaatar
  • Zamin Uud – road and train crossing to China
  • Bulgan – road crossing to China in the west

FDFA (Switzerland) — transport and specific advice, in French

Transport and infrastructure

Frequently asked questions — travel insurance Mongolia

What is the official risk level in Mongolia today?

Level 1/4 — Exercise Normal Precautions, U.S. Department of State, retrieved on 31 October 2026.

  • Is the whole country advised against? United States: no · France: no · United Kingdom: no · Switzerland: no (reading of 24 October 2026).
  • Contractually, only an FDFA, FOPH or WHO advisory against the trip opens Module A (art. 18.1) — that is not the case today.
  • Travel with international medical cover and the 24/7 number (+41 22 ••• •• ••) saved: here the risk is not the advisory, it is the hospital bill.
  • We check these sources every morning and e-mail you the day one changes (Alerts button).

Is the whole of Mongolia advised against, or only some areas?

An area advised against does not rule out the country.

  • Official answers: United States: no · France: no · United Kingdom: no · Switzerland: no.
  • Keep your country of residence's advisory on booking day and on departure day: that is what your policy's clauses cite.

What are the entry requirements for Mongolia with my passport?

The rules depend on the passport, not on the destination alone.

  • French passport (France Diplomatie): French tourists can stay in Mongolia for up to 30 consecutive days without a visa until December 31, 2026. Visa-free stays can be extended for an additional 30 days by applying in person or online at least five working days before expiry. French nationals staying longer than 30 days must register with the Immigration Agency within 48 hours of arrival.
  • British passport (Foreign Office): British citizens require a passport valid for at least six months beyond their arrival date to enter Mongolia. British citizens can visit Mongolia for tourism visa-free until December 31, 2026, for stays up to 30 days. Adults travelling with children who are not their own must carry a notarised letter from the parents or legal guardian.
  • American passport: the requirements are on the State Department country page (travel.state.gov).
  • Swiss passport: the FDFA refers you to the destination's embassy in Switzerland.
  • Pick your passport at the top of Before you go › Entry: the official text that concerns you comes first, with its “In brief” summary.

Do I need an insurance certificate for a Mongolia visa?

For a Schengen visa, yes: at least €30,000 of travel medical insurance (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, art. 15).

  • Many other countries ask for it on entry or for a visa, case by case: check Before you go › Entry, with your passport.
  • Subscribe: the named certificate arrives by e-mail on payment, with your name, dates and limits (EUR 1.5M medical expenses, unlimited evacuation and repatriation) — the ones consulates check.
  • Attach it to the visa file; if in doubt about the format, write to us.

What should I do if hospitalised in Mongolia?

Six steps, in this order.

  • 1. Call +41 22 ••• •• •• before paying anything, or have the front desk call: it is the condition for full cover (otherwise: reduced or refused benefits).

Is an Amex, Visa or Mastercard enough in Mongolia?

At today's level 1/4, card by card:

  • Amex Platinum — No area exclusion at this level — but three written limits: deductible and prior approval, 90-day cap, advance under conditions.
  • Visa — No express area exclusion — but a €156,000 cap, 90 days, and the war/instability exclusion in the background.
  • Mastercard — No exclusion in play at this level — but a €155,000 cap and 90 covered days.
  • Three lines to read in your notice: the duration (often 90 days per trip), the settlement (reimbursement afterwards or direct payment of the hospital) and the area exclusion at level 4/4.

Are a health plan or a travel policy enough in Mongolia?

A health plan reimburses at home; here, the hospital asks for a payment guarantee before admission.

  • Health plan — A health plan treats you at home. Here the hospital asks for a guarantee before admission — not a later reimbursement.
  • Travel policy — No area exclusion at this level — compare cap, deductible and covered duration.
  • A travel policy often has a territorial clause at level 4/4 and a 90-day limit per trip.
  • Have your IPID number or the PDF of the terms and ask an expert to call you back: the answer is in the document, not in the brochure.

How do I use the medical network on this page?

Can I be treated in Mongolia, or will I be evacuated?

4.1 physicians per 1,000 people (2022) versus 4.5 in Switzerland.

  • 8.6 hospital beds per 1,000 people versus 4.4 in Switzerland (World Bank).
  • Medical density comparable to Switzerland: the local network handles most cases; repatriation remains a question of convalescence and cost. Health spending of 360 USD per person (Switzerland: 11,784) goes with private hospitals that bill foreigners in hard currency and ask for a guarantee before admission: the direct payment guarantee is what avoids the deposit.
  • When the local facility is not enough, Maximum's medical team decides the evacuation to a suitable centre, and pays for it (art. 6.2.2).

Mongolia: safety, in figures?

5.9 homicides per 100,000 people (2023) versus 0.6 in Switzerland and 1.3 in France.

  • 21.0 road deaths per 100,000 people versus 2.2 in Switzerland (World Bank, WHO).
  • The homicide rate is 10 times Switzerland's: violence is a real risk there, concentrated in the areas named by the official advisories. On the road, 10 times more deaths than in Switzerland: road crashes are the leading cause of death of healthy travellers (CDC) — seat belt, no night driving, a driver or a taxi from a rank.
