How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

The official advice, in full

Source: France Diplomatie (health advice, in French).

In brief
  • Consult your GP or an international travel medicine centre to assess your health and receive vaccination advice before departure, and consider a dental check-up. France Diplomatie
  • Pack a personal pharmacy with only necessary medications in original packaging with original labels and an international non-proprietary name prescription; never use street-bought medicines. France Diplomatie
  • Ensure routine French vaccinations (diphtheria, tetanus, polio, whooping cough, measles) are up to date; some countries may require an oral polio vaccine or yellow fever certificate on arrival. France Diplomatie
  • For mosquito-borne diseases (chikungunya, dengue, Zika), use long clothing, insect repellent, mosquito nets and eliminate standing water; seek immediate medical care if fever or joint pain occurs. France Diplomatie
  • Follow strict food and water hygiene: wash hands, drink only bottled or boiled water, avoid raw foods, and peel fruits and vegetables; cook meat and seafood thoroughly. France Diplomatie
  • British travellers should verify healthcare availability, secure travel insurance covering local treatment and evacuation, and note emergency number 911; private hospitals may not accept insurance without prior confirmation. Foreign Office

  • Diphtérie-tétanos-poliomyélite (DTP) : obligatoire par un vaccin oral (VPO) pour les voyageurs venant de pays d’endémie ou d’épidémie de poliomyélite ;
  • Fièvre jaune : obligatoire pour les voyageurs en provenance de zones d'endémie ;
  • Hépatite A : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Fièvre typhoïde : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Hépatite B : en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Tuberculose : chez les enfants de moins de 15 ans en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Chikungunya : en cas d’épidémie ou de séjour prolongé ;

  • Porter des vêtements longs et couvrants ;
  • Appliquer des produits répulsifs cutanés sur les zones découvertes du corps ;
  • Protéger son logement (moustiquaires imprégnées d’insecticide, diffuseurs électriques, serpentins à l’extérieur, climatisation, etc.) ;

  • Se laver les mains régulièrement avec de l’eau et du savon ou des solutions de lavage hydroalcooliques, surtout avant et après les repas et le passage aux toilettes ;
  • Veiller à la qualité des aliments et surtout à leur bonne cuisson ;
  • Éviter la consommation de produits alimentaires (poisson, viande, volaille, lait) crus ou peu cuits ;
  • Peler les fruits et légumes ou les laver soigneusement (à l’eau saine) ;
  • Éviter les crudités, coquillages, plats réchauffés et buffets froids ;

  • de suivre l’évolution des ouragans sur le site du National Hurricane Center (en anglais) ;
  • de se conformer aux recommandations relatives aux risques climatiques (cyclones et ouragans) ;

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad .

Terrorism in St Kitts and Nevis

Although there is no recent history of terrorism in St Kitts and Nevis, attacks cannot be ruled out.

Crime

There have been incidents of serious crime including murder, armed robbery and sexual assault.

Take precautions to protect your personal safety:

  • make sure your accommodation is secure – this also applies if you’re staying on a yacht
  • take care when walking alone off main roads
  • take particular care around large gatherings, including street and beach parties, especially after dark or during the festival season
  • avoid isolated areas, including beaches, after dark
  • only use licensed taxis
  • do not carry large amounts of cash or jewellery
  • leave valuables and travel documents in your hotel safe or a safety deposit box
  • keep car doors locked when driving and do not stop if pedestrians try to flag down your vehicle
Protecting your belongings

Do not carry large amounts of cash or wear expensive-looking jewellery or watches. Where possible leave valuables and travel documents in a safe deposit box or hotel safe.

Camouflage clothing

It is illegal for anyone, including children, to dress in camouflage clothing. You could get a 250 Eastern Caribbean dollar ( EC dollar) fine and 3 months in prison.

Illegal drugs and prison sentences

There are severe penalties for all drug offences, particularly drug trafficking. If convicted at Magistrates Court, you could get a fine of up to 400,000 EC dollars or 3 times the street value, whichever is higher, and up to 10 years in prison. If the case goes to the High Court, sentences are a minimum of 15 years, up to life imprisonment.

Marijuana (cannabis) for personal use has been decriminalised, but you must have a licence to use it. There are fines for smoking of marijuana in some public places or without a licence.

LGBT+ travellers

Attitudes towards the LGBT+ community are mostly conservative in the Caribbean. Showing affection in public (for example, holding hands or kissing) is uncommon for opposite or same-sex couples and may receive unwanted and negative attention.

Read more advice for LGBT+ travellers .

Swimming safety

Take care when swimming. Currents can be deceptively strong and not all beaches have lifeguards and warning flags. Monitor all beaches carefully and follow warnings.

See water safety on holiday from the Royal Life Saving Society.

Road travel

If you are planning to drive in St Kitts and Nevis, see information on driving abroad .

You must have a St Kitts and Nevis driving licence. You can buy a temporary licence from the Inland Revenue Department , valid for either 3 months (62.50 EC dollars) or one year (125 EC dollars). How do I use the medical network on this page?

The page reads hospitals, pharmacies and doctors from OpenStreetMap, around the point you choose.

  • Type your city, hotel or beach: the map re-centres, 24/7 emergency rooms come first.
  • Each row gives the phone when the source publishes it, the nearest street, directions and the Google Maps listing.
  • The PDF briefing repeats the same places, numbered on a printable map.
  • No customer reviews: OpenStreetMap has none, and we invent none.

Can I be treated in Saint Kitts and Nevis, or will I be evacuated?

3.1 physicians per 1,000 people (2018) versus 4.5 in Switzerland.

  • 4.0 hospital beds per 1,000 people versus 4.4 in Switzerland (World Bank).
  • With 3.1 physicians per 1,000 people (31% fewer than Switzerland), the nearest hospital does not always have the capacity for a serious case: evacuation to an adequate centre is the rule, not the exception — that is what unlimited evacuation and repatriation cover. Health spending of 1,295 USD per person (Switzerland: 11,784) goes with private hospitals that bill foreigners in hard currency and ask for a guarantee before admission: the direct payment guarantee is what avoids the deposit.
  • When the local facility is not enough, Maximum's medical team decides the evacuation to a suitable centre, and pays for it (art. 6.2.2).
