How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

Make sure you are up-to-date on all routine vaccines before every trip. Some of these vaccines include Chickenpox (Varicella) Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis (DTaP, Tdap, or Td) Flu (influenza) Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) Polio Shingles

COVID-19CDC ↗

All eligible travelers should be up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines. Please see  Your COVID-19 Vaccination  for more information.

Hepatitis ACDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers one year old or older going to Guinea-Bissau. Infants 6 to 11 months old should also be vaccinated against Hepatitis A. The dose does not count toward the routine 2-dose series. Travelers allergic to a vaccine component should receive a single dose of immune globulin, which provides effective protection for up to 2 months depending on dosage given.

Hepatitis BCDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers of all ages traveling to Guinea-Bissau.

MalariaCDC ↗

CDC recommends that travelers going to Guinea-Bissau take prescription medicine to prevent malaria. Depending on the medicine you take, you will need to start taking this medicine multiple days before your trip, as well as during and after your trip. Talk to your doctor about which malaria medication you should take. Transmission areas All Drug resistance 1 Chloroquine Species P. falciparum (primarily) P.

MeaslesCDC ↗

Cases of measles are on the rise worldwide. Travelers are at risk of measles if they have not been fully vaccinated at least two weeks prior to departure, or have not had measles in the past, and travel internationally to areas where measles is spreading.

RabiesCDC ↗

Dogs infected with rabies are commonly found in Guinea-Bissau. If rabies exposures occur while in Guinea-Bissau, rabies vaccines are typically not readily available.

TyphoidCDC ↗

Recommended for most travelers. Typhoid vaccine is not 100% effective. Practicing safe food and water habits , including washing hands at key times , can also help prevent typhoid fever .

Yellow FeverCDC ↗

CDC recommendations:  Vaccine is recommended for all travelers ≥9 months old. Country entry requirements:   Vaccine is required for all arriving travelers ≥1 year old. Updated April 23, 2025

The official advice, in full

Source: France Diplomatie (health advice, in French).

In brief
  • Consult your GP or an international vaccination centre to assess health needs and receive travel-specific recommendations, including vaccinations; visit a dentist before departure if needed. France Diplomatie
  • Pack a personal pharmacy with original, labelled medications and a prescription in international non-proprietary names; verify legality in destination country; never use street-bought medicines. France Diplomatie
  • Ensure routine French vaccinations (diphtheria, tetanus, polio, whooping cough, measles) are up to date; yellow fever vaccination is mandatory where endemic and must be administered in an approved centre before travel. France Diplomatie
  • British travellers must check NHS travel vaccination page at least 8 weeks before travel for Guinea-Bissau requirements (yellow fever, dengue, Zika, malaria, schistosomiasis) and confirm healthcare access and insurance coverage. Foreign Office
  • Carry sufficient personal medication; hospitals in Guinea-Bissau require cash upfront and may not accept foreign insurance; import of controlled substances (e.g., methadone) requires prior approval from the destination embassy or consulate. DFAE

  • Fièvre jaune : la fièvre jaune est endémique et la vaccination contre la fièvre jaune est obligatoire (à pratiquer avant le départ dans un centre agréé) ;
  • Hépatite A : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Fièvre typhoïde : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Hépatite B : en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Méningite ACWY en cas de séjour pendant la saison sèche (habituellement hiver et printemps) ou d’épidémie signalée ;
  • Tuberculose : chez les enfants de moins de 15 ans en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Rage : notamment enfants en bas âge, séjour en milieu rural ou éloigné des villes principales ;
  • Chikungunya en cas d’épidémie ou de séjour prolongé ;
  • Dengue en cas d’épidémie active ou de séjour prolongé en zone endémique ;

  • Porter des vêtements longs et couvrants ;
  • Appliquer des produits répulsifs cutanés sur les zones découvertes du corps ;
  • Protéger son logement (moustiquaires imprégnées d’insecticide, diffuseurs électriques, serpentins à l’extérieur, climatisation, etc.) ;

  • Se laver les mains régulièrement avec de l’eau et du savon ou des solutions de lavage hydroalcooliques, surtout avant et après les repas et le passage aux toilettes ;
  • Veiller à la qualité des aliments et surtout à leur bonne cuisson ;
  • Éviter la consommation de produits alimentaires (poisson, viande, volaille, lait) crus ou peu cuits ;
  • Peler les fruits et légumes ou les laver soigneusement (à l’eau saine) ;
  • Éviter les crudités, coquillages, plats réchauffés et buffets froids ;

Guinea-Bissau - Level 3: Reconsider TravelState Department ↗updated 10.12.2025 · read 16.10.2026

Updated 10.12.2025

Reconsider travel to Guinea-Bissau due to unrest , inadequate health infrastructure, and landmines .

There is no U.S. embassy or consulate in Guinea-Bissau. The U.S. government has limited ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens. Consular services are provided by the U.S. embassy in Dakar, Senegal.

Unrest

Guinea-Bissau has had periods of political instability for decades, including political unrest in November 2025. Large-scale demonstrations related to the local political situation may occur with little notice. Demonstrations may disrupt transportation and other essential services.

Health

Guinea-Bissau’s health infrastructure is inadequate. Health services, hygiene, and quality control do not meet U.S. standards of care. Pharmacies are not well regulated. Locally available medications are limited and may be unsafe. Even a minor health issue may require medical evacuation at your own expense.

Landmines

Landmines and unexploded ordnance from prior conflicts exist throughout Guinea-Bissau. Areas of greatest risk are Bafata, Oio, Biombo, Quinara, and Tombali. The locations of landmines and unexploded ordnance are often not known, marked, or easy to recognize.

In brief
  • Avoid travel to the border zone with Senegal unless absolutely necessary due to trafficking risks, potential tensions, and unmarked minefields along the Casamance frontier; stay on paved roads and do not deviate from main routes.
  • If travel along the border is unavoidable, travel only by day, keep the itinerary confidential except when reporting it to the French Consulate General in Dakar at bulletin.dakar-fslt@diplomatie.gouv.fr, and move in convoy with multiple vehicles.
  • On the Bissau–Ziguinchor road, remain on the main paved route from Ingoré to the Mpack border post.
  • Throughout the country except the Senegal border zone, avoid night travel due to poor road conditions and crime; do not carry large sums of cash or jewelry on foot, and keep car windows closed and doors locked.
  • Political gatherings are banned; avoid all demonstrations or crowds as the country remains under military-led transition government until elections scheduled for December 2026.
  • Night driving is strongly discouraged due to unlit vehicles, pedestrians, animals on roads, and the risk of roadblocks; theft and muggings increase in Bissau and its suburbs, especially during holiday periods.

  • ne pas laisser ses effets personnels ou bagages sans surveillance ou visibles dans un véhicule ;
  • ne pas porter d’objets de valeur, en particulier dans les lieux publics ;
  • ne pas mettre d’objets de valeur dans les sacs à dos ;
  • ne pas porter de sac à main ;
  • ne pas se déplacer avec tous ses papiers d’identité sur soi : utiliser des photocopies et déposer les documents d’identité dans un coffre sécurisé ; conserver des photos de ses papiers dans son téléphone et dans le « cloud » ;
  • circuler avec les portières verrouillées et les vitres fermées ;
  • ne rien laisser sur les sièges à l’intérieur des véhicules ;
  • éviter les déplacements à pied la nuit.

General assessment

World Meteorological Organization

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad .

Terrorism in Guinea-Bissau

Although there is no recent history of terrorism in Guinea-Bissau, attacks cannot be ruled out.

Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places frequented by foreign nationals. Stay aware of your surroundings, keep up to date with local media reports and follow the advice of local authorities.

Political situation

Guinea-Bissau suffers from political instability. In the event of any political unrest follow the advice of local authorities and monitor local media for information. Stay alert to local developments and avoid sensitive areas like military installations and government buildings. Avoid demonstrations or large public gatherings.

If you have any doubts about the level of security in an area, stay at home or in your hotel.

Crime

Pickpocketing and bag and phone snatching are relatively common in the capital city, Bissau. Where possible, keep valuables such as phones hidden when out in public.

Be especially careful in remote areas where security forces have a limited presence.

Landmines

Landmines remain a risk in parts of the country, and demining operations continue. The national demining centre (CAAMI) declared Bissau free from landmines. Outside of Bissau, take local advice and stay on paved roads.

Personal ID

You must carry ID such as a passport or residence permit, particularly when driving or in a taxi. Police forces regularly ask for ID.

Illegal drugs and prison sentences

There are severe penalties for all drug offences. Local prison conditions are harsh.

LGBT+ travellers

Same-sex sexual relationships are not criminalised. However, Guinea-Bissau is a conservative society and same-sex couples showing affection in public may attract unwanted and negative attention.

Money

Guinea-Bissau is a cash-based economy. Credit cards are rarely used and there are not many ATMs in the country. If you need to exchange foreign currency, use an official bureau de change.

Road travel

If you are planning to drive in Guinea-Bissau, see information on driving abroad .

You can use a UK photocard driving licence to drive in Guinea-Bissau for up to 3 months. If you still have a paper driving licence, you may need to update it to a photocard licence or get the correct version of the international driving permit ( IDP ) as well. You’ll also need a registration card number with you in the vehicle – your car hire firm should provide this.

It’s recommended you get local car insurance recognised by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Brown Card scheme .

Hire car companies often have stricter requirements for their customers, such as a year of driving experience, a higher minimum age and holding an IDP .

Drink-driving is a serious offence in Guinea-Bissau. If you are tested and found to have any alcohol in your system, you may get a fine and a possible prison sentence.

Road conditions

Traffic is generally light but driving standards and road conditions, including in Bissau, are poor. Avoid road travel at night and take suitable…

Visa

FDFA (Switzerland) — transport and specific advice, in French

Transport and infrastructure

The health system — With 0.2 physicians per 1,000 people (96% fewer than Switzerland), the nearest hospital does not always have the capacity for a serious case: evacuation to an adequate centre is the rule, not the exception — that is what unlimited evacuation and repatriation cover. Health spending of 82 USD per person (Switzerland: 11,784) goes with private hospitals that bill foreigners in hard currency and ask for a guarantee before admission: the direct payment guarantee is what avoids the deposit.

What are the entry requirements for Guinea-Bissau with my passport?

The rules depend on the passport, not on the destination alone.

  • French passport (France Diplomatie): A visa is mandatory for entry into Guinea-Bissau; in France, apply at the Embassy of Guinea-Bissau in Paris. Emergency visas may be issued at Bissau airport if the Immigration Department is notified in advance or if the traveler’s country lacks a Guinea-Bissau mission; payment must be made in cash and may exceed embassy fees. Upon arrival at Bissau airport, travelers must declare all goods in detail and pay applicable duties and taxes, while also complying with foreign exchange controls.
  • British passport (Foreign Office): British citizens must hold a passport valid for at least 6 months after the arrival date to enter Guinea-Bissau, or entry will be denied. A visa is mandatory for all visits to Guinea-Bissau; apply via the Guinea-Bissau Embassy in Paris at 94 Rue St Lazare, 75009 Paris or embgbfr@gmail.com. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for entry; check TravelHealthPro’s Guinea-Bissau guide for details.
  • American passport: the requirements are on the State Department country page (travel.state.gov).
  • Swiss passport: the FDFA refers you to the destination's embassy in Switzerland.
  • Pick your passport at the top of Before you go › Entry: the official text that concerns you comes first, with its “In brief” summary.

Do I need an insurance certificate for a Guinea-Bissau visa?

For a Schengen visa, yes: at least €30,000 of travel medical insurance (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, art. 15).

  • Many other countries ask for it on entry or for a visa, case by case: check Before you go › Entry, with your passport.
  • Subscribe: the named certificate arrives by e-mail on payment, with your name, dates and limits (EUR 1.5M medical expenses, unlimited evacuation and repatriation) — the ones consulates check.

Your policy — benefits, the six steps, claims, articles. The site — prices, certificate, subscription. Nothing else: what it does not know, it says so and hands you to an adviser.

Same advisory level: Saudi Arabia · Azerbaijan · Bahrain · Burundi · Colombia · Guatemala

The displayed level comes from the State Department, checked every morning. Before departure, always cross-check your country of residence's advisory: that is what your policy cites.

The level shown is the official U.S. Department of State level, checked daily. Maximum Insurance is an insurance distributor — general information, not personal advice.
