How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers younger than 60 years old traveling to Guatemala. Unvaccinated travelers 60 years and older may get vaccinated before traveling to Guatemala.

MalariaCDC ↗

CDC recommends that travelers going to certain areas of Guatemala take prescription medicine to prevent malaria. Depending on the medicine you take, you will need to start taking this medicine multiple days before your trip, as well as during and after your trip. Talk to your doctor about which malaria medication you should take.

MeaslesCDC ↗

Cases of measles are on the rise worldwide. Travelers are at risk of measles if they have not been fully vaccinated at least two weeks prior to departure, or have not had measles in the past, and travel internationally to areas where measles is spreading.

MonkeypoxCDC ↗

Monkeypox vaccination is recommended for any adult who anticipates any of the following activities during travel: Sexual or intimate contact with a new partner Sexual or intimate contact at a commercial sex venue, like a sex club or bathhouse Sexual or intimate contact in exchange for money, goods, drugs, or other trade Sexual or intimate contact in association with a large public event, such as a rave, party, or…

RabiesCDC ↗

Dogs infected with rabies are sometimes found in Guatemala. Rabies is also present in bats. If rabies exposures occur while in Guatemala, rabies vaccines may only be available in larger suburban/urban medical facilities.

TyphoidCDC ↗

Recommended for most travelers. Typhoid vaccine is not 100% effective. Practicing safe food and water habits , including washing hands at key times , can also help prevent typhoid fever .

The official advice, in full

Source: France Diplomatie (health advice, in French).

In brief
  • Consult your doctor or an international vaccination center at least 8 weeks before travel for health assessments and recommended vaccinations, including diphtheria, tetanus, polio, and measles.
  • Carry necessary personal medications in their original packaging with an International Nonproprietary Name (INN) prescription, ensuring they are permitted in Guatemala.
  • Private clinics in Guatemala City offer comprehensive medical care, but hospitals require upfront payment in cash or by credit card before treatment.
  • Be aware of mosquito-borne illnesses like Chikungunya and Dengue, and take precautions such as wearing long clothing and using insect repellent.
  • Prevent typhoid fever by practicing good hygiene, ensuring food is well-cooked, and drinking only bottled or purified water.
  • Avoid all contact with potentially rabid animals, and consider pre-travel rabies vaccination for children or those traveling to rural areas.

  • Fièvre jaune : o bligatoire pour les voyageurs en provenance de zones d’endémie ;
  • Hépatite A : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Fièvre typhoïde : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Hépatite B : en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Méningite ACWY en cas de séjour pendant la saison sèche (habituellement hiver et printemps) ou d’épidémie signalée ;
  • Rage : notamment enfants en bas âge, séjour en milieu rural ou éloigné des villes principales ;
  • Chikungunya : en cas d’épidémie ou de séjour prolongé ;

  • Porter des vêtements longs et couvrants ;
  • Appliquer des produits répulsifs cutanés sur les zones découvertes du corps ;
  • Protéger son logement (moustiquaires imprégnées d’insecticide, diffuseurs électriques, serpentins à l’extérieur, climatisation, etc.) ;

  • Se laver les mains régulièrement avec de l’eau et du savon ou des solutions de lavage hydroalcooliques, surtout avant et après les repas et le passage aux toilettes ;
  • Veiller à la qualité des aliments et surtout à leur bonne cuisson ;
  • Éviter la consommation de produits alimentaires (poisson, viande, volaille, lait) crus ou peu cuits ;
  • Peler les fruits et légumes ou les laver soigneusement (à l’eau saine) ;
  • Éviter les crudités, coquillages, plats réchauffés et buffets froids ;

Updated 11.03.2026

Reconsider travel to Guatemala due to crime and terrorism . Some areas have higher risks. Please read the full Travel Advisory.

Some areas of Guatemala have higher levels of gang-related violence. Crimes include robbery, carjacking, drug trafficking, assaults, and murders. Local law enforcement often struggles to address serious crimes. This leads to low arrest and conviction rates.

Tourists can become victims of opportunistic crimes such as scams and extortion.

There is risk of terrorist attacks and other terrorist activities from cartels, gangs, and criminal organizations in San Marcos Department, Huehuetenango Department, Zone 18 in Guatemala City, and the city of Villa Nueva. Visit the U.S. Department of State’s Country Reports on Terrorism to learn more.

Tourist Assistance Program

Guatemala offers the Tourist Assistance Program (ASISTUR) to protect tourists.

  • ASISTUR partners with tourist police (DISETUR) in popular areas like Antigua, Lake Atitlán, Tikal, Quetzaltenango, Puerto Barrios, and Coban.
  • Dial 1500 or +502-2290-2810 anytime from a Guatemalan phone number. You can also message them on WhatsApp at +502-5188-1819 . Their emergency call center operates in Spanish and English.
  • You can request a security escort if your group feels unsafe.

U.S. government employee travel restrictions

  • U.S. government employees and their families are not permitted to travel to the San Marcos Department, Huehuetenango Department, Zone 18 in Guatemala City, and Villa Nueva due to safety risks.
  • U. S. government employees can travel to other parts of Guatemala and visit popular destinations like Tikal, Antigua, Lake Atitlán, and the Pacific coast areas in Santa Rosa and Escuintla. However, U.S. government employees should avoid driving outside Guatemala City at night. This is due to poor lighting and safety risks.
  • Outside of Zone 18 and Villa Nueva, U.S. government employees and their families can travel throughout Guatemala City, including at night.
  • U.S. government employees may not use white taxis or public transportation, like “chicken buses.” This is due to the high chance of crime and injury.
  • Visit the U.S. embassy in Guatemala City ’s website. You will find local resources, like legal help and medical services. You will also find information on residence and work permits, and driver’s licenses. It also covers rules about bringing…

  • Travel to archaeological sites like Nakum and El Naranjo by 4x4 with a local driver due to difficult road conditions, especially during the rainy season.
  • Be aware of common crimes such as armed robbery by motorcyclists targeting pedestrians or vehicle occupants during traffic stops.
  • Carry your passport and driving licence at all times when travelling by vehicle to avoid heavy penalties during police checks.
  • During the rainy season from May to October, be prepared for floods, landslides, and damaged roads, particularly those leading to tourist sites.

  • ne pas transporter tous ses papiers et son argent dans un seul sac et sortir avec le strict minimum ; conserver en lieu sûr (dans le coffre de sa chambre d’hôtel par exemple) de l’argent voire son passeport (ne circuler qu’avec une photocopie en cas de déplacement dans les environs de l’hôtel) ;
  • en toutes circonstances, adopter une attitude discrète et ne pas attirer l’attention en portant des bijoux, des vêtements coûteux, appareils photos et objets de valeur ;
  • éviter de sortir des axes routiers importants et de conduire de nuit ;
  • limiter les déplacements à pied, seul dans les endroits isolés (ville ou campagne) ;
  • signaler les déplacements et les itinéraires à des proches ;
  • confier l’organisation de son séjour touristique à une agence de voyages professionnelle reconnue ;
  • privilégier les visites de sites touristiques en groupe ;
  • ne pas pratiquer le camping sauvage.

En cas d’agression, il est recommandé :

  • d’avoir toujours des espèces sur soi, dans une poche facile d’accès, afin de pouvoir le donner rapidement ;
  • de n’opposer aucune résistance et de ne pas négocier ;
  • de quitter les lieux de l’agression le plus rapidement possible et se mettre en sécurité (hôtel, commerce) ;
  • d’appeler systématiquement la police touristique liée à l’INGUAT au 1500 et signaler l’agression à l’ambassade ;
  • de porter plainte auprès des autorités locales.
Baignade

  • d’interroger l’Institut National du Tourisme (INGUAT) ;
  • de se renseigner sur l’activité volcanique via l’INSIVUMEH pour savoir si l’ascension est possible ;
  • dans l’affirmative, en informer les services de la municipalité ;

This section has safety advice for regions of Guatemala. It only covers regions where FCDO has specific advice.

You should also read FCDO ’s overall travel advice and safety and security advice .

Borders with Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador and Belize

FCDO advises against all but essential travel within 5km of the Mexican border from the Pacific Coast up to and including the Gracias a Dios crossing. This is due to increased and sustained gang-related violence along the Mexico-Guatemala border.

FCDO also advises against all but essential travel to the towns of Santa Ana Huista, San Antonio Huista and La Democracia in the department of Huehuetenango

Pay particular attention to your security in the border areas with Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador and Belize.

Take care near the Belize-Guatemala border because of the ongoing dispute between the 2 countries. Use only officially recognised border crossings.

Ixchiguan and Tajumulco

There is a risk of violent crime in the municipalities of Ixchiguan and Tajumulco in the department of San Marcos. If you plan to travel to these areas, get advice from PROATUR , Guatemala’s tourist assistance service (see Getting help for contact details), including whether current conditions mean it is safe to climb the Tajumulco volcano.

Roads around Sololá, Panajachel and Lake Atitlán

PROATUR , Guatemala’s tourist assistance service (see Getting help for contact details) gives advice on routes when travelling in and around Sololá, Panajachel and Lake Atitlán. PROATUR advises:

  • to avoid the Godinez bypass between Guatemala City and Panajachel (which passes through Patzún) which is an isolated area with high risks of criminality - the Pan American Highway is an alternative route that will take you from Guatemala City to Sololá avoiding these areas.
  • to avoid the road between Cocales (Suchitepequez) and San Lucas Toliman (Atitlán) if possible, because of the risks of criminality and poor road conditions

Boat services between towns on the shore of Lake Atitlán may be a safer alternative.

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad .

Terrorism in Guatemala

Although there’s no recent history of terrorism in Guatemala, attacks cannot be ruled out.

Political situation

Incidents of political violence, strikes and large demonstrations can occur, often with little or no notice. Most demonstrations are peaceful, but they can turn violent. Protestors may block roads and public facilities, including the international airport, without notice.

Crime

Guatemala has one of the highest violent crime rates in Latin America. Although most of the serious crime involves local gangs, you could be caught up in incidents as they can happen in tourist areas.

No parts of Guatemala City are free from crime, including Zone 10 (Zona Viva), which is popular with tourists and foreign residents. Take care in Zone 1 where tourists have been targeted by opportunistic criminals, this is the historical centre where cheaper hotels are located and several bus routes end.

If you are planning to visit or stay in the outer zones of the City such as Zones 18-25, you should use reputable chain hotels and research the area extensively as these zones are known for higher levels of crime. Zones 6, 7 and 8 should also be treated with caution.

When travelling to more rural parts of Guatemala you should travel with a reputable tour company and follow local security advice. Areas in and around the departments of Huehuetenango, Chiquimula, Zacapa, Izabal, San Marcos and Petén experience high levels of crime. You should remain within the touristic areas and travel during daylight hours where possible.

Violent crime

Violent attacks, including sexual assault and gun crime, can take place anywhere and at any time of the day. Attackers have killed and injured victims who resisted. There is a low arrest and conviction rate.

Carjacking and armed robbery are common.

There have been armed attacks or robberies on most tourist routes between Guatemala City, Antigua, Tikal, Petén and Lake Atitlán. See Regional risks .

Protecting yourself and your belongings

You can take precautions such as:

  • not displaying valuables like laptops, cameras and mobile phones
  • not wearing a lot of jewellery
  • carrying only small amounts of cash – avoid withdrawing a lot of money, particularly at night
  • keeping valuables safe (for example, in a hotel safe)
  • not travelling alone or at night, especially near borders or in areas without many people

If you go to remote areas, it may be safer to travel with others or a reputable tour company.

For shorter trips within towns and cities the safest option is to take radio-dispatched taxis (which are usually yellow), Uber (where available) or hotel taxis. You can buy pre-paid taxi vouchers from the office of INGUAT , Guatemala’s tourist agency (Spanish language website) in the airport’s arrivals terminal.

If you’re driving, it is generally safer to travel on main roads. There is a greater risk of attack by gangs on quieter routes. Travel in convoy if possible.

Be aware of your surroundings and take care around ATMs, petrol station forecourts, the airport, bus stations and…

In brief
  • You must always carry identification; a copy of your passport's photo page is usually acceptable, but original passports or certified copies may be required in San Pedro La Laguna, Sololá.
  • Penalties for drug possession, use, or trafficking are severe, with convicted offenders facing lengthy prison sentences in overcrowded and violent facilities.
  • Do not photograph government buildings, military installations, the Presidential Palace, or airports; seek permission before photographing children and women, especially in Indigenous areas, to avoid accusations of kidnapping.
  • Canadian debit cards with a four-digit PIN may work at some ATMs, but U.S. dollars can be exchanged at most major banks, as Canadian dollars are not accepted.
  • While same-sex sexual activity is not illegal, 2SLGBTQI+ individuals may face discrimination outside Guatemala City, and public displays of affection are not advised.
  • You can drive with a valid Canadian driver's licence and should carry an International Driving Permit; be aware that you may be taken into custody following an accident causing injury or death.

Faithful summary of the official texts below, which prevail.

Local laws

You must abide by local laws. Learn about what you should do and how we can help if you are arrested or detained abroad.

Drugs

Penalties for possession, use or trafficking of illegal drugs are severe. Convicted offenders can expect lengthy prison sentences.

  • Pack your own luggage and monitor it closely at all times
  • Never transport other people’s packages, bags or suitcases

Drugs, alcohol and travel

International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. It does not apply between Canada and Guatemala. If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in Guatemala by an abducting parent:

  • act as quickly as you can
  • consult a lawyer in Canada and in Guatemala to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
  • report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies. Be aware that Canadian consular officials cannot interfere in private legal matters or in another country's judicial affairs.

2SLGBTQI+ persons

Guatemalan law doesn’t criminalize sexual acts or relationships between individuals of the same sex. However, 2SLGBTQI+ persons could be discriminated against based on their sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, or sex characteristics. Travel and your sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression and sex characteristics

Investments

If you plan on buying property or making other investments in Guatemala, seek legal advice in Canada and in Guatemala. Do so before making commitments. Related disputes could take time and be costly to resolve.

Dress and behaviour

Guatemala has many different and firmly held local beliefs and customs. To avoid offending local sensitivities:

  • dress conservatively
  • behave discreetly
  • respect religious and social traditions
Imports and exports

Customs authorities may enforce strict regulations concerning the import or export of items such as antiquities and artefacts.

Photography

It is illegal to photograph:

  • government buildings
  • military installations and establishments
  • the Presidential Palace
  • airports

Don’t photograph children and women, especially in areas with Indigenous presence.

Driving

You can drive in Guatemala with your valid Canadian driver’s licence. You should carry an International Driving Permit. If you are involved in a driving accident that results in injury or death, you may be taken into custody until responsibility for the accident is determined. International Driving Permit

Money

The currency of Guatemala is the Guatemalan quetzal (GTQ). You cannot exchange Canadian dollars in Guatemala. Some ATMs will accept Canadian debit cards with a four-digit PIN. Canadian debit cards with a five-digit PIN are not accepted. U.S. dollars may be exchanged for local currency at most major banks.

Foreign Office — laws and cultural differences

Personal ID

It is a legal requirement to always carry ID. In most parts of the country, you can carry a copy of your passport’s photo page for identification purposes. In San Pedro La Laguna, Sololá, local authorities may not accept a copy and may fine or detain you if you cannot show your original passport or a certified copy. Always co-operate with military and police officers and be prepared for checkpoints.

Alcohol laws and bans

During specific periods (such as elections) alcohol sales may be banned or restricted during certain times.

Illegal drugs and prison sentences

There are severe penalties for drug trafficking and the use of drugs. Guatemalan prisons are overcrowded, violent, and dirty.

Taking photos without permission

Do not take photographs without permission, especially of children. This is particularly important in more remote areas such as Quiché, Petén, San Marcos and Chiquimula provinces. There have been attacks related to accusations and fears of child kidnapping for adoption or theft of vital organs. Foreigners have been caught up in the violence. You may need to pay a small amount of money to take photographs of both children and adults.

LGBT+ travellers

Same sex sexual activity is not illegal, although there are no laws guaranteeing freedom from discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation. Same-sex marriages are not recognised in Guatemala. In Guatemala City, local people are largely tolerant of LGBT+ people. Outside Guatemala City, attitudes are more conservative. Showing affection in public may bring verbal and physical attacks, harassment and discrimination. Read more advice for LGBT+ travellers.

: +502 2411 2411).

Entry requirements — rules for a British passport

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of Guatemala’s current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Guatemala set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Guatemalan Embassy in the UK .

Passport validity requirements

To enter Guatemala, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the date you arrive and at least 2 blank pages.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement . See Dual citizenship .

Visa requirements

You can visit Guatemala for up to 90 days without a visa.

If you overstay the 90 days, you’ll have to pay a fine before leaving the country. You can pay this fine at the main Institute of Migration (in Spanish) office in Guatemala City. You can also pay fines at the airport or land borders, but administrative processes can cause serious delays.

Applying for or extending a visa

To stay longer than 90 days (to work or study, for business, travel or for other reasons), you must meet the Guatemalan government’s entry requirements. Check which type of visa or work permit you need with the Guatemalan Embassy in the UK .

If you want to extend your visa or permit to stay, you must apply to the Institute of Migration (Spanish language website).

Make sure you get your passport stamped on entry.

If you do not get your passport stamped when you arrive, you will get a fine and be delayed on your departure. If you notice your passport has not been stamped, return to the immigration desk immediately, or go to the Institute of Migration (in Spanish) offices in Guatemala City as soon as possible.

Immigration declaration form

Before you enter or exit Guatemala, you must complete the online immigration declaration form . If you can, print the confirmation email you receive and carry it with you. Alternatively take a screenshot of the email QR code. If you need more information, contact your travel agent or the Institute of Migration (in Spanish).

This form can be done on arrival just before immigration, there are dedicated terminals to complete the online form. However, this can delay your arrival into the country.

Airport tax

You must pay airport departure tax of 30 US dollars (or the same amount in Guatemalan quetzal). This is normally included in the price of your ticket.

Travelling with children

To enter or exit Guatemala, children aged 17 and under travelling alone or with only one parent or legal guardian must have a notarised letter in Spanish from the parents or guardians not travelling with them. Contact the Guatemalan Embassy , or if you’re in Guatemala the nearest Institute of Migration (Spanish language website), for information about what documents you need.…

What the texts say · Violent attacks, including sexual assault and gun crime, can take place anywhere and at any time of the day. Express kidnappings – short term opportunistic abductions, aimed at extracting cash from the victim – are common in Guatemala.

What they advise:
  • If you are a victim of a criminal attack, INGUAT has a tourist assistance and emergency service section called PROATUR who can help accompany you to your hotel or other safe place.
  • If you are a victim of kidnapping, follow the kidnapper’s instructions.
  • For shorter trips within towns and cities the safest option is to take radio-dispatched taxis (which are usually yellow), Uber (where available) or hotel taxis.

FDFA (Switzerland) — transport and specific advice, in French

Transport and infrastructure

What is the official risk level in Guatemala today?

Level 3/4 — Reconsider Travel, U.S. Department of State, retrieved on 16 October 2026.

  • Switzerland’s FDFA advises against travel to certain regions (published 08.04.2026).

Is the whole of Guatemala advised against, or only some areas?

An area advised against does not rule out the country.

  • Official answers: United States: except for imperative reasons · France: no · United Kingdom: no · Switzerland: no.
  • Foreign Office, regional risks: “This section has safety advice for regions of Guatemala. It only covers regions where FCDO has specific advice. You should also read FCDO ’s overall travel advice and safety and security advice . Borders with Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador and Belize FCDO…”

What are the entry requirements for Guatemala with my passport?

The rules depend on the passport, not on the destination alone.

  • French passport (France Diplomatie): French nationals require a valid passport for entry into Guatemala. All travellers must complete the online customs declaration form to obtain a QR code. No visa is needed for stays of less than three months.
  • British passport (Foreign Office): British citizens must ensure their passport is valid for at least six months beyond their arrival date and has two blank pages for entry into Guatemala. Visitors may stay in Guatemala for up to 90 days without a visa; overstays incur a fine payable to the Institute of Migration. British citizens must have their passports stamped upon entry to avoid fines and departure delays.
  • American passport: the requirements are on the State Department country page (travel.state.gov).
  • Swiss passport: the FDFA refers you to the destination's embassy in Switzerland.
  • Pick your passport at the top of Before you go › Entry: the official text that concerns you comes first, with its “In brief” summary.

Do I need an insurance certificate for a Guatemala visa?

For a Schengen visa, yes: at least €30,000 of travel medical insurance (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, art. 15).

  • Many other countries ask for it on entry or for a visa, case by case: check Before you go › Entry, with your passport.
  • Subscribe: the named certificate arrives by e-mail on payment, with your name, dates and limits (EUR 1.5M medical expenses, unlimited evacuation and repatriation) — the ones consulates check.
  • Attach it to the visa file; if in doubt about the format, write to us.

Are a health plan or a travel policy enough in Guatemala?

A health plan reimburses at home; here, the hospital asks for a payment guarantee before admission.

  • Health plan — A health plan treats you at home. Here the hospital asks for a guarantee before admission — not a later reimbursement.
  • Travel policy — No area exclusion at this level — compare cap, deductible and covered duration.
  • A travel policy often has a territorial clause at level 4/4 and a 90-day limit per trip.
  • Have your IPID number or the PDF of the terms and ask an expert to call you back: the answer is in the document, not in the brochure.

Can I be treated in Guatemala, or will I be evacuated?

1.3 physicians per 1,000 people (2020) versus 4.5 in Switzerland.

  • 0.5 hospital beds per 1,000 people versus 4.4 in Switzerland (World Bank).
  • With 1.3 physicians per 1,000 people (71% fewer than Switzerland), the nearest hospital does not always have the capacity for a serious case: evacuation to an adequate centre is the rule, not the exception — that is what unlimited evacuation and repatriation cover. Health spending of 392 USD per person (Switzerland: 11,784) goes with private hospitals that bill foreigners in hard currency and ask for a guarantee before admission: the direct payment guarantee is what avoids the deposit.
  • When the local facility is not enough, Maximum's medical team decides the evacuation to a suitable centre, and pays for it (art. 6.2.2).

Guatemala: safety, in figures?

23.4 homicides per 100,000 people (2023) versus 0.6 in Switzerland and 1.3 in France.

  • 22.9 road deaths per 100,000 people versus 2.2 in Switzerland (World Bank, WHO).
  • UCDP (Uppsala University): 11 geolocated violent incidents, 21 deaths over the last closed period, each placed on the map.
  • The homicide rate is 39 times Switzerland's: violence is a real risk there, concentrated in the areas named by the official advisories. On the road, 10 times more deaths than in Switzerland: road crashes are the leading cause of death of healthy travellers (CDC) — seat belt, no night driving, a driver or a taxi from a rank.

Which laws and customs should I know in Guatemala?

Local laws apply to every traveller; here is what the official texts say.
