How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

Exercise normal precaution in Ireland.

Ireland is generally a safe destination for travelers. Travelers should remain vigilant as petty crime is common, especially in popular tourist locations. Stay aware of your surroundings. Most crimes against foreigners are crimes of opportunity, like purse snatching and pickpocketing. Large-scale demonstrations related to the local political situation may occur with little notice.

Entry requirements — rules for a British passport

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of the current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Ireland set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Irish Embassy in the UK .

Passport and ID requirements

British nationals are not legally required to show a passport to enter Ireland, but it may be useful to carry in case you need to prove your identity. British and Irish citizens can continue to travel freely between the UK and Ireland under the Common Travel Area.

Some airlines and ferry operators have introduced, or will be introducing, a passport-only identification requirement. Check your carrier’s requirements before departure and, where necessary, travel with a valid passport. Check the Ireland Citizens Information Board for guidance on acceptable ID .

Irish immigration officers are entitled to ask for proof of British nationality in the course of their work.

Visa requirements

You can visit and remain indefinitely in Ireland under the Common Travel Area rules . British nationals do not need a visa or residency permit to live, work or study in Ireland.

Although Ireland is in the EU, it is not part of the Schengen area , and Schengen rules do not apply.

As Ireland is not in the Schengen area it is therefore not affected by the new Entry/Exit System (EES) that will be introduced in Schengen countries from 12 October 2025. You will not need to register for EES when entering Ireland. Read more information on the EU Entry/Exit System and to understand which countries are in the Schengen area .

Vaccine requirements

For details about medical entry requirements and recommended vaccinations, see TravelHealthPro’s Ireland guide .

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods you can take into and out of Ireland . You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Travelling with pets

Read about travelling to the EU with your pet and check the Irish entry requirements for pets .

Taking money into Ireland

Declare cash or travellers cheques if the value is 10,000 euros or more . You will get a certified declaration to show you brought it in with you. If you do not, your money could be seized when you leave.

What are the entry requirements for Ireland with my passport?

The rules depend on the passport, not on the destination alone.

  • French passport (France Diplomatie): French nationals need a valid national identity card or passport to enter Ireland; verify the document remains valid throughout your stay, as some airlines refuse boarding with expired documents. French nationals travelling to Northern Ireland from Ireland must hold a valid passport, as French national identity cards are no longer accepted by British authorities. French nationals must obtain a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling to Northern Ireland from 2 April 2025, unless holding a British visa or British or Irish resident status.
  • British passport (Foreign Office): British nationals need not carry a passport to enter Ireland under Common Travel Area rules, but some airlines and ferry operators require one; verify your carrier's identification requirements before departure. British nationals do not need a visa or residency permit to live, work, or study in Ireland and may remain indefinitely under Common Travel Area rules. Ireland is not part of the Schengen area, so the new Entry/Exit System (EES) effective 12 October 2025 does not apply; British nationals need not register for EES when entering Ireland.
  • American passport: the requirements are on the State Department country page (travel.state.gov).
  • Swiss passport: the FDFA refers you to the destination's embassy in Switzerland.
  • Pick your passport at the top of Before you go › Entry: the official text that concerns you comes first, with its “In brief” summary.

Do I need an insurance certificate for a Ireland visa?

For a Schengen visa, yes: at least €30,000 of travel medical insurance (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, art. 15).

  • Many other countries ask for it on entry or for a visa, case by case: check Before you go › Entry, with your passport.

Are a health plan or a travel policy enough in Ireland?

A health plan reimburses at home; here, the hospital asks for a payment guarantee before admission.

Which regions of Ireland should I avoid, precisely?

No region is advised against by the official readings checked (Global Affairs Canada, Foreign Office and France Diplomatie): the national advice applies everywhere.

  • Your point (Dublin): country-wide vigilance.
  • Maximum does not exclude these areas: the VIP Pack covers care and repatriation there (sanctions, embargoes and a country already at war at departure remain enforceable).

Which laws and customs should I know in Ireland?

Local laws apply to every traveller; here is what the official texts say.

  • You must abide by all local laws, as penalties for drug possession, use, or trafficking are severe and can result in jail sentences and heavy fines.
  • If your child is wrongfully taken to or retained in Ireland, you may apply for their return under The Hague Convention, acting quickly and contacting your provincial Central Authority.
  • You can drive in Ireland with a valid Canadian driver's licence for up to 12 months; an International Driving Permit is recommended.
  • You must declare cash or monetary instruments of €10,000 or more when entering or leaving the European Union, unless travelling within the EU or in transit to a non-EU country.
  • Possession of any amount of illegal drugs, including cannabis, carries severe penalties, including long jail sentences and heavy fines, even when transiting through airports.
