Does your bank card really cover you abroad?

Travel insurance attached to bank cards covers real amounts, subject to conditions. American Express Platinum, Visa Infinite, Mastercard World Elite and standard travel policies exclude or qualify travel to officially advised-against areas. They apply an excess, cap medical expenses and limit each trip to 90 days. Visa and Mastercard notices are issued bank by bank: yours governs.

The four products at a glance

Bank card travel insurance is not an empty contract: the limits are real. The question is therefore not "am I insured?" but "within what scope". Four public documents have been read again, document in hand, and every figure on this page comes from them. Their clause wordings are French; this page states what each clause does, in English, and the contractual French text is quoted in full in the advised-against countries file.

ProductMedical expenses limitExcessMaximum durationCertificate for a visa
American Express Platinum€2,000,00010% (min. €150, max. €500)90 consecutive days per tripNot provided
Visa Infinite (BNP Paribas notice, contract PT7)€156,000 per beneficiary and per event€50First 90 days of the tripNot provided
Mastercard World Elite (Fortuneo notice)€155,000€75First 90 days of the tripNot provided
Standard travel insurance (Europ Assistance, « Évasio temporaire »)€150,000 to €300,000 depending on the area€3090 consecutive days maximumNot settled by the terms read

Three readings stand out at once. The highest limit comes with the heaviest excess. All four documents stop at the same place, 90 days, while their limits run from €150,000 to €2,000,000. And none of the three card documents issues the certificate a consulate asks for, the fourth leaving the point unsettled. Each also carries an area clause: the substance of each is given below with its dated reference, and the wordings themselves are gathered, quotation by quotation, in the advised-against countries file.

Does American Express Platinum cover an advised-against area?

No, in the document read. Reference: « Assurances et Assistances, Parce que vous êtes Platinum », French general terms and conditions applicable from 01/01/2025, general exclusion no. 11, page 11 (PDF FR_INS_PLATINUM_CG.pdf, americanexpress.com). What triggers the exclusion is a recommendation issued by the cardholder's own government against the destination.

One word does all the work: the exclusion is a general one, so it does not bear on a single benefit but on every travel cover in the contract. This is also the only one of the four products whose excess is a percentage, and the only one whose medical cover depends on how the trip itself was paid for. The 90-day boundary is taken apart in the Amex Platinum file.

Does Visa Infinite cover an advised-against area?

Not in the same way. Reference: BNP Paribas information notice, insurance contract no. PT7, 04/2025 edition, common exclusions, page 12. The text rules out no destination at all: it rules out causes of loss — civil or foreign war, popular unrest, riots, terrorism, and political instability of a kind the notice calls notorious.

The difference is one of nature, not of degree: a territorial exclusion can be checked before departure, against the rating of the destination; an exclusion by cause is checked afterwards, against the origin of the claim. The limit itself is set per beneficiary and per event — what that formula does to the arithmetic is handled in the Visa Infinite file.

Does Mastercard World Elite cover an advised-against area?

No, in the document read. Reference: Fortuneo notice, in force from 01/01/2026, article 5.5 « Exclusions territoriales », page 11. The clause bears on journeys to destinations that are formally advised against, judged as at the departure date, and it names one authority alone: the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs.

Two things a short summary does not show, and both change the reach of the text: the clause holds three scales — the country, the region, the area — and not the border alone; and the moment it fixes is departure, neither booking nor claim. The five expressions of article 5.5 are taken one by one in the World Elite Mastercard file.

Does standard travel insurance cover an advised-against area?

No, in the document read. Reference: general provisions « Évasio temporaire », Europ Assistance, reference EA5117/2, 03/2021, chapter 1.D, pages 2-3. The chapter rules out journeys to destinations formally advised against by government authorities.

The mechanism matches the Fortuneo notice with one difference: no administration is named. The reader is therefore not told which authorities count — those of the country of residence, those of the country visited, or others. What that vagueness produces, and what the contract provides on the hospital side, is examined in the standard travel insurance file.

Why does your own notice govern, and not the brand?

This is the most widely misunderstood point of the whole subject. Visa and Mastercard are payment networks: they insure nobody. The policy attached to a card is taken out by the bank that issues it, with the insurer that bank has chosen, and it is the bank that publishes the notice handed to the cardholder. Two cards of the same range, at two different institutions, therefore fall under two distinct policies, with their own amounts, their own exclusions and their own numbering.

The two documents cited above show it by themselves. The Visa Infinite notice is published by BNP Paribas under insurance contract no. PT7: that number designates this bank's policy, not the card. The Mastercard World Elite notice is published by Fortuneo, where the area clause carries the number 5.5: elsewhere the same clause will fall under another number, where it appears at all. American Express is the exception in this panel, since the terms cited are published by the issuer, which is also the network. Hence this: no general figure holds for "a Visa Infinite", nor for "a World Elite", nor for a Visa Premier, no edition of which has been read here. Across the documents read, limits run from €155,000 to €2,000,000 depending on the issuer.

How to find yours, and tell whether it is current

Once the document is open, the exact wordings these area clauses use, each with its article and its version, are gathered in the advised-against countries file: it is enough to search the PDF for them.

What the excess really takes off a small bill

The limit sits at the top of the table; the excess decides what actually reaches your account. Only one of the four documents sets it as a percentage: the American Express Platinum terms hold 10%, with a floor of €150 and a ceiling of €500. The other three figures are flat amounts: €30 in the Évasio temporaire provisions, €50 in the BNP Paribas notice, €75 in the Fortuneo notice.

A percentage rule has two tipping points, and they take one line to work out. Below €1,500 of expenses the floor governs, since 10% of €1,500 is exactly €150. Above €5,000 the ceiling governs, since 10% of €5,000 is exactly €500. Between those two boundaries, and only there, the excess follows the stated percentage.

An emergency room visit billed at €300 gives the measure: €150 would stay with you under the American Express document, half the bill, against €75, €50 and €30 under the other three. On a large claim the order reverses and the excess stops being the issue: the €156,000 and €155,000 limits of the two bank notices are what decide. So the product best equipped for large bills is the most expensive on small ones. This calculation assumes the excess is taken off the reimbursable amount, which is how the terms read: check the drafting of your own.

What the "trip paid with the Card" condition implies

Of the four documents read, only one makes the medical cover conditional on the trip having been paid for with the means of payment itself: the American Express Platinum terms applicable from 01/01/2025. This is not a paperwork formality, it is what opens the cover.

Three common situations do not meet it as written: a trip settled by the company on a corporate account, a ticket paid for by a third party — a client, an organiser, a relative — and a trip paid with a card other than the one carrying the insurance. In all three, the card stays valid and the annual fee stays due: it is the medical cover that was never triggered.

The same document adds a second requirement, invisible in the limit: the insurer's prior agreement, to be obtained before care and not after. None of the other three documents sets it out in the terms read. For an employer the consequence is direct: a travel policy resting on employees' personal cards assumes each of them paid for their own trip with their own card, which is rarely the case. That is one of the points handled by the corporate pack.

What does the VIP Pack do differently?

The comparison is only worth making line by line. On the left, what the four documents read lay down; on the right, what collective policy no. 20 00 479, taken out with the insurer, carries.

Three entities carry this contract, and it is worth knowing which does what. The insurer: a Swiss insurance company. The distributor: WinHealth Group SA, a broker authorised by FINMA under no. F01210623. The care network: a worldwide medical network of 40,000 accredited hospitals and providers, reached through a single emergency line open 24/7, provided on subscription (+41 22 ••• •• ••). Rate: $990 for twelve months, or $99 a month.

Away from the table, the table of benefits also carries trip cancellation to the tune of CHF 5,000, trip interruption to the tune of CHF 10,000, an advance of the same amount should means of payment be lost or stolen, search and rescue to the tune of CHF 50,000, accidental death or disability to the tune of CHF 150,000, and private liability abroad capped at CHF 1,000,000. All of it applies under the Corporate Mobility General Conditions (edition 2025.03), outside the country of residence and subsidiary to compulsory schemes.

A second tier exists: the VIP Extreme Pack, priced at $2,290 for twelve months ($229 a month). It takes in everything above, lifts to CHF/EUR/USD 20,000 per person the trip cancellation or modification cover, and opens a special-risk module A capped at CHF 5,000 per person, for a political event, an attack, an epidemic or a natural disaster. Subject to eligibility it adds crisis management and security, together with the Kidnap & Ransom cover set out at article 18.4 of the general conditions.

Before you book

Four files take each of these documents apart line by line: Amex Platinum, Visa Infinite, Mastercard World Elite and standard travel insurance. The destination's official level, for its part, is recorded on the map of 207 countries, with its dated movements on the alerts feed.

Two orders of magnitude to close. What a limit has to finance, first: a medical repatriation from the United States is estimated at up to €260,000 (Staysure, 2023-2024 claims), and the country-by-country detail together with the recording method sit in the repatriation file. What plays out at admission, second: when a hospital asks for a deposit, the question is no longer the limit but who undertakes to the facility, and that is the whole subject of the payment guarantee page. And for a group departure, the corporate pack counts places rather than names, while the Duty of Care OS documents the follow-up.

Frequently asked questions

Does my bank card insurance cover a country that is advised against?

In the four documents read, no, or only subject to conditions. Three carry an express territorial exclusion: American Express Platinum general terms applicable from 01/01/2025, general exclusion no. 11, page 11; Mastercard World Elite Fortuneo notice in force from 01/01/2026, article 5.5, page 11; Évasio temporaire provisions from Europ Assistance, reference EA5117/2, 03/2021, chapter 1.D. The fourth, the BNP Paribas Visa Infinite notice under contract no. PT7, 04/2025 edition, rules out causes of loss rather than destinations. The wordings themselves are gathered on /zones-deconseillees; your own notice governs.

Which card has the highest medical expenses limit?

Across the four documents read, the American Express Platinum general terms applicable from 01/01/2025: €2,000,000, against €156,000 in the BNP Paribas Visa Infinite notice (contract no. PT7, 04/2025 edition) and €155,000 in the Fortuneo Mastercard World Elite notice. That limit comes with the heaviest excess of the set, 10% with a minimum of €150, and with two conditions the other documents do not set: the insurer's prior agreement and payment of the trip with the Card. None of these figures holds for a Visa Premier or for a card held at another bank.

How long does bank card insurance cover a trip?

The four documents cited stop at 90 days: 90 consecutive days per trip for American Express Platinum, the first 90 days of the trip for Visa Infinite (BNP Paribas, contract PT7) and for Mastercard World Elite (Fortuneo notice), 90 consecutive days maximum for Europ Assistance « Évasio temporaire ». Beyond that period, the documents cited no longer provide cover. The VIP Pack covers twelve months, with unlimited trips within the year.

Where can I find the insurance notice for my bank card?

In your online banking area, under the section devoted to your cards or your contractual documents, under the heading insurance information notice. Failing that, request it in writing from your adviser, insisting on its edition date. Then note three items and keep them: the contract number, the name of the insurer and the date of edition. That triplet identifies your cover; the brand printed on the card does not. An earlier edition may have been superseded: it is the version in force that governs.

Is bank card insurance enough to obtain a visa?

None of the three card documents read provides an insurance certificate for a visa application, and the standard travel policy does not settle the point in the terms read. The format required also varies from one consulate to another: check your general terms and the document asked for before you file. The Maximum Insurance VIP Pack issues a named certificate accepted for visa applications, Schengen included, issued as soon as payment is made.

Why do two cards of the same range not carry the same insurance?

Because Visa and Mastercard are payment networks and insure nobody: the policy is taken out by the issuing bank, with the insurer it chooses, and it is that bank which publishes the notice. The Visa Infinite notice read here is published by BNP Paribas under contract no. PT7; the Mastercard World Elite notice is published by Fortuneo, where the area clause carries article number 5.5 — elsewhere it will fall under another number. Across the documents read, limits run from €155,000 to €2,000,000 depending on the issuer.
