How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

  • Hépatite A : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Fièvre typhoïde : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Hépatite B : en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;

Before you travel check that:

  • your destination can provide the healthcare you may need

This is particularly important if you have a health condition or are pregnant.

Emergency medical number

Dial 112 and ask for an ambulance.

Contact your insurance or medical assistance company quickly if you’re referred to a medical facility for treatment.

Vaccine recommendations and health risks

At least 8 weeks before your trip:

Read best practice when travelling with medicines on TravelHealthPro .

Healthcare in Czechia

FCDO has a list of medical providers in Czechia where some staff will speak English.

Health insurance cards

To get medically necessary state healthcare in Czechia, you need a Global Health Insurance Card ( GHIC ) or a European Health Insurance Card ( EHIC ).

The NHS’s getting healthcare abroad webpage has details about:

  • how to apply for a GHIC
  • how to get temporary cover if you lose your card or it does not arrive in time
  • who qualifies for a new EHIC instead of a GHIC
  • what treatment counts as medically necessary

A GHIC or EHIC is not an alternative to travel insurance. You may have costs your GHIC or EHIC does not cover, including:

  • changes to travel and accommodation bookings
  • additional standard costs for treatment
  • medical repatriation to the UK
  • treatment that is ruled non-urgent
  • private healthcare

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad .

Terrorism in Czechia

Terrorist attacks in Czechia cannot be ruled out.

You should be aware of the global risk of indiscriminate terrorist attacks which could be in public places, including in places frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers.

Political situation

Public protests may happen at short notice. These have been peaceful but take care in crowded places and follow the instructions of local authorities.

Crime

If you are victim of crime, immediately call 112 for assistance.

Protecting yourself and your belongings

Petty theft is a problem, especially in major tourist areas in Prague. There is a risk of pickpocketing:

  • on busy metro and bus routes from Prague airport to the city centre
  • on trams to popular tourist sites like Prague Castle
  • in busy tourist areas

Take care of yourself and your belongings in the same way as you would do in the UK. Avoid leaving your belongings unattended.

Report thefts in person to the nearest Czech police station within 24 hours and get a police report crime number for insurance purposes.

Prague police station (Jungmannovo namesti 9, Prague 1, nearest metro stop is Mustek) is open 24 hours a day and would provide English speaking interpreters.

You can also get a police report from the police station at the airport. See Prague police station contact details (in Czech).

Every lamppost in Prague has a 6-digit number posted at eye level. These codes will help you tell the police where you are if you cannot give them an exact address.

Drink spiking

There is a risk of drink spiking in bars and clubs. Be careful not to take drinks from strangers or leave your drinks unattended.

Scams

Beware of criminals pretending to be plainclothes policemen who ask to see your foreign currency and passport. Czech police officers do not have the right to do this. Do not show them your money. Instead, offer to go with them to the nearest police station. You can also call 112 to check their identity.

Travelling in groups

If you’re travelling in a group, keep a note of your hotel phone number and address in case you are separated. Leave contact details with a friend or relative in the UK.

Prague safety issues

Prague city police advise visitors to:

  • always change money at a currency exchange or bank rather than on the street as this money is often counterfeit
  • take care when using cash machines
  • avoid contact with sex workers
  • be aware of consumption charges in night clubs as they are often high
  • be careful with consumption cards, which carry high financial penalties if you lose them before you pay your bill
Personal ID

It is a legal requirement to carry ID. Always carry your passport. The police may fine or arrest you if you do not. They will normally accept a scan of your passport if you have not committed a crime.

Drunken and offensive behaviour

Stag groups are not allowed to enter some city centre bars and restaurants. You may be arrested or fined for drunken or offensive behaviour. Police may take you to ‘sober-up’ facilities for a temporary period, and you will have to pay for your…

  • Carry your passport at all times
  • Keep a photocopy or a digital copy in a safe place, in case it is lost or stolen

Penalties for possession, use or trafficking of illegal drugs are severe. Convicted offenders can expect jail sentences or heavy fines. Drugs, alcohol and travel

International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. The convention applies between Canada and Czechia. If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in Czechia, and if the applicable conditions are met, you may apply for the return of your child to the Czech court. If you are in this situation:

  • act as quickly as you can
  • contact the Central Authority for your province or territory of residence for information on starting an application under The Hague Convention
  • consult a lawyer in Canada and in Czechia to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
  • report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to the Vulnerable Children's Consular Unit at Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies. Be aware that Canadian consular officials cannot interfere in private legal matters or in another country's judicial affairs.

Driving

You must be at least 18 years old to drive in Czechia. You must carry an international driving permit. Headlights must be on at all times. Winter tires are mandatory from November 1 to March 31. All vehicles must have:

  • a first-aid kit
  • a warning triangle
  • high-visibility vests, to be carried in the passenger compartment rather than in the trunk, for the driver and any passenger who leaves the vehicle in case of breakdown

An electronic vignette is required to travel on all major highways. You can buy this permit for a 10-day, 1-month or 1-year period:

  • online
  • at highway gas stations
  • at border crossings

Failure to display this permit may result in fines. All rental vehicles are provided with valid motorway permits. Regulations can change from one municipality to another. Always check signage and be on the lookout for zone-specific regulations. There is zero tolerance for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Penalties are severe. Convicted offenders can expect heavy fines or jail sentences.

Pedestrian traffic laws

Local authorities may fine pedestrians for violations such as jaywalking, crossing the street on a red light, or crossing the roadway at a non-designated location, particularly in Prague’s city centre. Trams have the right of way over pedestrians, including at pedestrian crossings.

Public transportation

Before using public transportation, you must validate your ticket by using machines located on board or in the station. You will receive a fine requiring immediate payment if an inspector carries out an inspection and:

  • you don’t have a ticket
  • your ticket has not been validated
  • your ticket has expired
Money

The currency of Czechia is the Czech koruna (CZK). Non-official currency exchange is illegal. Plus, you are at risk of receiving counterfeit bills.

  • Never exchange money with vendors on the street
  • Use official exchange offices or banks only

If you are carrying €10,000 or more, or the equivalent in other currencies or monetary instruments, you must make a declaration to customs when you enter or leave the European Union. This does not apply if you are travelling within the European Union or in transit to a non-EU country. EU Cash Controls – European Commission

Foreign Office — laws and cultural differences

Police may take you to ‘sober-up’ facilities for a temporary period, and you will have to pay for your stay.

Illegal drugs

The possession, sale and distribution of drugs, including cannabis, is illegal, and the drugs are often dangerous counterfeits. Some shops, particularly in Prague, advertise ‘cannabis products’, which contain trace amounts of THC permissible under Czech law. You should expect severe penalties such as a long jail sentence and heavy fines for possessing, using or smuggling illegal drugs, including when transiting through the airport. Convictions carry sentences of up to 18 years. Airports in Czechia have excellent technology and security for detecting illegal items. This is also used to scan the baggage of transiting passengers.

LGBT+ travellers

Same-sex relationships and civil partnerships are legal in Czechia, but same-sex marriages are not recognised in Czech law. Registered same-sex partnerships are awaiting presidential approval. Same-sex couples showing affection in public could receive unwanted attention. Read more advice for LGBT+ travellers.

Surrogacy

It is illegal to earn money from a surrogacy arrangement. The police may charge you if you are:

  • a surrogate mother
  • a British national who plans to take a child born through surrogacy
  • an agent organising the handover

FCDO advises against making surrogacy arrangements in Czechia or moving surrogacy arrangements from other countries. You should get specialist legal advice in the UK and Czechia. See surrogacy arrangements in foreign countries.

Entry requirements — rules for a British passport

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of the current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Czechia set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Czech Embassy in the UK .

Passport validity requirements

Czechia follows Schengen area rules . Your passport must:

  • have a ‘date of issue’ less than 10 years before the date you arrive – if you renewed your passport before 1 October 2018, it might have a date of issue that is more than 10 years ago, making it invalid for entry to the Schengen area
  • have an ‘expiry date’ at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen area (the expiry date does not need to be within 10 years of the date of issue)

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement . See Dual citizenship .

Visa requirements

You can travel without a visa to the Schengen area, which includes Czechia, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This applies if you travel:

  • as a tourist
  • to visit family or friends
  • to attend business meetings, cultural or sports events
  • for short-term studies or training

The requirements for working in Czechia are different.

If you’re travelling to other Schengen countries as well, make sure your whole visit is within the 90-day limit. Visits to Schengen countries in the 180 days before you travel count towards your 90 days. If you overstay the 90-day visa-free limit, you may be banned from entering Schengen countries for up to 3 years.

At Czech border control, you may also need to:

  • show a return or onward ticket
  • prove that you have enough money for your stay – the amount varies depending on your accommodation
Staying longer than 90 days in a 180-day period

To stay longer, you must meet the Czech government’s entry requirements. Check which type of visa or permit you need with the Czech Embassy in the UK .

If you stay in Czechia with a residence permit or long-stay visa, this does not count towards your 90-day visa-free limit.

Read about entry processes if you live in Czechia .

New Schengen entry requirements

The European Union’s (EU) new Entry/Exit System (EES) is now being implemented across the Schengen area.

This means that when you travel into the Schengen area for short stays, you may need to register your biometric details, such as fingerprints and a photo. There is no cost for EES registration.

On your first visit into a Schengen country, you may be asked to register your details at a special booth before proceeding to the immigration desk. Follow directions from your travel operator or the staff at your port of entry. You may also need to provide either your fingerprint or photo when you leave the Schengen area. Children aged…

Is the whole of Czechia advised against, or only some areas?

An area advised against does not rule out the country.

  • Official answers: United States: no · France: no · United Kingdom: no · Switzerland: no.
  • Keep your country of residence's advisory on booking day and on departure day: that is what your policy's clauses cite.

What are the entry requirements for Czechia with my passport?

The rules depend on the passport, not on the destination alone.

  • French passport (France Diplomatie): French nationals and EU citizens need no visa for stays under three months in Czech Republic, which is in the Schengen area. French nationals must carry a valid national identity card or passport to enter, travel within, and leave Czech Republic. French nationals with identity cards showing expired dates but benefiting from the five-year extension should download and print the multilingual notice explaining these rules.
  • British passport (Foreign Office): British passport holders must ensure their passport was issued less than ten years before arrival and expires at least three months after planned departure from the Schengen area. British citizens may travel visa-free to Czechia for up to ninety days within any one hundred eighty-day period for tourism, visiting family, business meetings, or short-term studies. Overstaying the ninety-day visa-free limit in Schengen countries may result in a ban from entering Schengen countries for up to three years.
  • American passport: the requirements are on the State Department country page (travel.state.gov).
  • Swiss passport: the FDFA refers you to the destination's embassy in Switzerland.
  • Pick your passport at the top of Before you go › Entry: the official text that concerns you comes first, with its “In brief” summary.

Do I need an insurance certificate for a Czechia visa?

For a Schengen visa, yes: at least €30,000 of travel medical insurance (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, art. 15).

  • Many other countries ask for it on entry or for a visa, case by case: check Before you go › Entry, with your passport.
  • Subscribe: the named certificate arrives by e-mail on payment, with your name, dates and limits (EUR 1.5M medical expenses, unlimited evacuation and repatriation) — the ones consulates check.
  • Attach it to the visa file; if in doubt about the format, write to us.

Is an Amex, Visa or Mastercard enough in Czechia?

  • Mastercard — No exclusion in play at this level — but a €155,000 cap and 90 covered days.

Are a health plan or a travel policy enough in Czechia?

A health plan reimburses at home; here, the hospital asks for a payment guarantee before admission.

  • Health plan — A health plan treats you at home. Here the hospital asks for a guarantee before admission — not a later reimbursement.
  • Travel policy — No area exclusion at this level — compare cap, deductible and covered duration.
  • A travel policy often has a territorial clause at level 4/4 and a 90-day limit per trip.
  • Have your IPID number or the PDF of the terms and ask an expert to call you back: the answer is in the document, not in the brochure.

Can I be treated in Czechia, or will I be evacuated?

4.3 physicians per 1,000 people (2022) versus 4.5 in Switzerland.

  • 6.5 hospital beds per 1,000 people versus 4.4 in Switzerland (World Bank).
  • Medical density comparable to Switzerland: the local network handles most cases; repatriation remains a question of convalescence and cost. Health spending of 2,693 USD per person (Switzerland: 11,784) goes with private hospitals that bill foreigners in hard currency and ask for a guarantee before admission: the direct payment guarantee is what avoids the deposit.
  • When the local facility is not enough, Maximum's medical team decides the evacuation to a suitable centre, and pays for it (art. 6.2.2).

Czechia: safety, in figures?

0.8 homicides per 100,000 people (2023) versus 0.6 in Switzerland and 1.3 in France.

  • 5.9 road deaths per 100,000 people versus 2.2 in Switzerland (World Bank, WHO).
  • The homicide rate is in the same range as Switzerland or France. On the road, 3 times more deaths than in Switzerland: road crashes are the leading cause of death of healthy travellers (CDC) — seat belt, no night driving, a driver or a taxi from a rank.
