How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

  • Fièvre jaune : la vaccination contre la fièvre jaune est fortement recommandée ;
  • Hépatite A : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Fièvre typhoïde : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Hépatite B : en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Méningite ACWY : en cas de séjour pendant la saison sèche (habituellement hiver et printemps) ou d’épidémie signalée ;
  • Tuberculose : chez les enfants de moins de 15 ans en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Rage : notamment enfants en bas âge, séjour en milieu rural ou éloigné des villes principales ;
  • Chikungunya : en cas d’épidémie ou de séjour prolongé ;
  • Dengue : en cas d’épidémie active ou de séjour prolongé en zone endémique ;
  • Mpox : en cas…
Maladies transmises par les moustiques

Chikungunya

  • Porter des vêtements longs et couvrants ;
  • Appliquer des produits répulsifs cutanés sur les zones découvertes du corps ;
  • Protéger son logement (moustiquaires imprégnées d’insecticide, diffuseurs électriques, serpentins à l’extérieur, climatisation, etc.) ;

  • Se laver les mains régulièrement avec de l’eau et du savon ou des solutions de lavage hydroalcooliques, surtout avant et après les repas et le passage aux toilettes ;
  • Veiller à la qualité des aliments et surtout à leur bonne cuisson ;
  • Éviter la consommation de produits alimentaires (poisson, viande, volaille, lait) crus ou peu cuits ;
  • Peler les fruits et légumes ou les laver soigneusement (à l’eau saine) ;
  • Éviter les crudités, coquillages, plats réchauffés et buffets froids ;

  • axe ouest Diouloulou-Bignona-Ziguinchor ;
  • axe est « la transgambienne » Sénoba-Bignona-Ziguinchor-Cap Skirring ;

  • lors de ses déplacements, quel que soit le quartier : éviter d’avoir sur soi bijoux et sommes d’argent importantes et, de préférence, faire une copie de son passeport plutôt que se déplacer avec le passeport lui-même ;
  • en voiture (circuler vitres fermées et portières verrouillées) ;
  • sur son lieu de séjour (faire appel à un gardiennage fiable et permanent, de jour comme de nuit) ;

  • de ne pas porter de manière ostentatoire d’objets qui pourraient attirer l’attention des voleurs à la tire et des pickpockets (actifs notamment en centre-ville et lors des rassemblements à caractère culturel, sportif ou politique) ;
  • de s’abstenir de circuler en voiture vitres ouvertes et portes non verrouillées ;

  • ne portez aucun objet de valeur sur vous (montre, bijou, etc.) ni de grosses sommes d'argent;
  • évitez toute promenade nocturne et tout déplacement de nuit à l'intérieur du pays;

  • une personne, invoquant une situation d’urgence médicale ou autre (agression à main armée, placement en détention, problèmes avec les autorités, problème de visa, etc.) vous demande de lui transférer de l’argent au plus vite;
  • on vous demande de communiquer vos coordonnées bancaires au motif d’un héritage ou d’un transfert d’argent à votre profit;
  • vous recevez des offres promettant un gain d’argent important;

You should also read FCDO ’s overall travel advice and safety and security advice .

Northern and eastern border areas

Take particular care in remote areas of Senegal near the border areas with Mauritania and Mali.

Terrorist groups, including Jama’a Nusrat ul-Islam wa al-Muslimin (JNIM), are active in neighbouring Mali, and have carried out deadly attacks close to the border with Senegal. Border areas may be at risk or destabilised as the borders are not tightly controlled. See ‘Terrorism’ .

Casamance Region

Casamance, the spur of land south of The Gambia, has suffered from decades of low-intensity separatist violence, largely directed at Senegalese security forces. Be on alert for clashes if you are travelling in the region, particularly close to the Gambian and Guinea-Bissauan borders. The risk of clashes is lower in the main tourist areas of the Casamance.

When driving:

  • avoid travelling at night
  • stick to main roads
  • travel in convoy if possible
  • do not pull over if anyone tries flag you down
  • be aware that many roads in the Casamance are of low quality

Senegalese forces carry out minor operations near the border with The Gambia to combat wood trafficking.

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad .

Terrorism in Senegal

Terrorist attacks in Senegal cannot be ruled out.

Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places visited by foreign nationals. Stay aware of your surroundings, keep up to date with local media reports and follow the advice of local authorities.

Several terrorist groups operate in neighbouring Mali, including Jama’a Nusrat ul-Islam wa al-Muslimin (JNIM) and Islamic State Sahel Province (ISSP). Whilst the regions most affected by terrorist activity are central and northern Mali, JNIM has increasingly conducted attacks in southern and western Mali near to the Senegalese border.

Terrorist kidnap

There is a threat of kidnapping in the wider Sahel region, which incorporates Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Chad and Burkina Faso, so take precautions to reduce the risk of kidnap in remote regions and border areas.

British nationals are seen as legitimate targets, including tourists, humanitarian aid workers, journalists and business travellers. If you are kidnapped, the reason for your presence is unlikely to protect you or secure your safe release.

The long-standing policy of the British government is not to make substantive concessions to hostage takers. The British government considers that paying ransoms and releasing prisoners builds the capability of terrorist groups and finances their activities. This can, in turn, increase the risk of further hostage-taking. The Terrorism Act (2000) makes payments to terrorists illegal.

Political situation

There are frequent demonstrations about political issues in Dakar and other cities.

Demonstrations can turn violent. Protestors sometimes block major roads, including the road between Blaise Diagne International Airport and the city of Dakar.

Monitor local media and ask local contacts about possible upcoming protests. Ahead of big demonstrations, if you’re in Dakar or another major city, consider stocking up on food, water and fuel. Once they have begun, you should:

  • continue to monitor local media for information
  • follow the instructions of local authorities
  • stay away from areas where demonstrations are taking place and exercise caution

If you are in doubt about where protests are taking place, or the level of safety of an area, stay at home or in your hotel.

Foreign nationals have been prosecuted for attending protests that have not been approved by the government.

Protecting yourself and your belongings

Cases of robbery, burglary and assault have become more common in Dakar, and in some cases, involve the use of weapons. Hotels frequented by foreign nationals have been targeted and robbed at gunpoint. Street crime like pickpocketing and bag-snatching is also on the increase in Dakar. To reduce your personal risk:

- avoid carrying large sums of money or valuables

- use a hotel safe to store passport and valuables whenever possible

- be alert when withdrawing cash from ATMs, and where possible go by pre-arranged transport

- be particularly careful after nightfall and avoid walking alone

- take care of your belongings when arriving at and leaving…

International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in Senegal by an abducting parent:

  • act as quickly as you can
  • consult a lawyer in Canada and in Senegal to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
  • report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre

Traffic violations

If a police officer asks you to pay a fine on the spot for a traffic violation, ask for a written copy of the fine, which can be paid later at a local courthouse or police station.

Money

The currency in Senegal is the CFA franc (XOF). Credit cards are accepted in large hotels, some restaurants, and stores. ATMs are available in Dakar and most major cities. However, it is not possible to withdraw large amounts of cash from them. Avoid exchanging large quantities of CFA francs for foreign currency at places other than reputable exchange bureaus or banks.

Foreign Office — laws and cultural differences

Local laws

Senegal is a predominantly Muslim country. Dress and behave modestly in public, especially during the holy month of Ramadan or if you visit religious areas. In the main tourist areas there is more acceptance of western-style holiday clothing. Bars and restaurants usually serve alcoholic drinks but drunkenness is considered offensive and penalties for drink-driving are severe. Kissing as a greeting is acceptable, but kissing romantically in public is not.

Ramadan

Ramadan is a holy month for Muslims. The dates vary by year and country. During this time, do not drink alcohol or wear revealing clothes in public during Friday prayers between 1pm and 3pm. Get more advice when you arrive from your tour guide, hotel or business contacts. You should also:

  • check opening hours of shops and restaurants
  • be aware that fasting can cause tiredness, particularly during the late afternoon and early evening when traffic will also be heavier than usual
  • be patient and show tolerance
Illegal drugs and prison sentences

There are severe penalties for possession, use or trafficking of illegal drugs. People accused regularly spend lengthy periods on remand before being tried. The maximum sentence for trafficking is 20 years. Prison conditions in Senegal are considerably poorer than in UK prisons. There may be problems such as overcrowding, lack of adequate meals, clean drinking water and electricity, and poor sanitation.

Money

Only use reputable exchange bureaux to change your money. Dakar has ATMs that accept foreign bank cards, but there are few ATMs or bank facilities in the rest of the country. Withdrawal limits can be low, and ATMs regularly run out of money, including in Dakar. Larger or more upmarket establishments that cater for tourists usually accept foreign credit cards. Mobile payment applications, such as Orange Money and Wave, are also widely used around the country.

LGBT+ travellers

Same-sex sexual acts are illegal in Senegal. The law is enforced and has led to arrests. On 30 March 2026, Senegal amended legislation increasing prison sentences for same-sex relations to 5–10 years and criminalise the “promotion, support or funding” of homosexuality, bisexuality and transsexuality. Same-sex relationships are generally not tolerated in Senegalese society. There is a risk of discrimination or harassment against individuals thought to be part of the LGBT+ community or perceived to be supporting their rights. Read more advice for LGBT+ travellers.

Entry requirements — rules for a British passport

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of Senegal’s current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Senegal set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Embassy of Senegal in the UK .

Passport validity requirements

To enter Senegal, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the date you arrive.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement . See Dual citizenship .

Visa requirements

You can visit Senegal without a visa for up to 3 months.

You need to show border officials evidence of return or onward travel and proof of your arranged accommodation. If you do not have these, you may be refused entry.

If you want to stay longer than 3 months, you must register with local authorities after you arrive. They will issue you with a Carte d’étranger , which you must carry as identification.

Vaccine requirements

You must have a certificate to prove you’ve had a yellow fever vaccination if you’re arriving from a country listed as a transmission risk . This includes if you have transited through the airport of a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. Babies aged 9 months and under are exempt.

You may need a yellow fever certificate for onward travel to some other countries, due to the risk of yellow fever in Senegal.

For full details about health entry requirements and recommended vaccinations, see TravelHealthPro’s Senegal guide .

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of Senegal (in French). You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

FDFA (Switzerland) — transport and specific advice, in French

Transport and infrastructure

What is the official risk level in Senegal today?

Level 1/4 — Exercise Normal Precautions, U.S. Department of State, retrieved on 16 October 2026.

  • Is the whole country advised against? United States: no · France: no · United Kingdom: no · Switzerland: no (reading of 27 September 2026).
  • Switzerland’s FDFA advises against travel to certain regions (published 20.04.2026).
  • Contractually, only an FDFA, FOPH or WHO advisory against the trip opens Module A (art. 18.1) — that is not the case today.
  • Travel with international medical cover and the 24/7 number (+41 22 ••• •• ••) saved: here the risk is not the advisory, it is the hospital bill.

  • Official answers: United States: no · France: no · United Kingdom: no · Switzerland: no.
  • Foreign Office, regional risks: “This section has safety advice for regions of Senegal. It only covers regions where FCDO has specific advice. You should also read FCDO ’s overall travel advice and safety and security advice . Northern and eastern border areas Take particular care in remote…”

What are the entry requirements for Senegal with my passport?

The rules depend on the passport, not on the destination alone.

  • French passport (France Diplomatie): French nationals need a passport valid for over six months for stays under three months in Senegal; no visa required. For stays exceeding three months, obtain a resident card from the Police des étrangers et des titres de voyage at your local prefecture in Senegal. Declare all goods, pay applicable duties and taxes, and complete currency control formalities upon entry to Senegal.
  • British passport (Foreign Office): Your British passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date in Senegal, or you will be denied entry. British citizens may visit Senegal visa-free for up to three months, but must show border officials proof of return or onward travel and accommodation arrangements. If staying longer than three months, you must register with local authorities upon arrival to obtain a Carte d'étranger, which you must carry as identification.
  • American passport: the requirements are on the State Department country page (travel.state.gov).
  • Swiss passport: the FDFA refers you to the destination's embassy in Switzerland.
  • Pick your passport at the top of Before you go › Entry: the official text that concerns you comes first, with its “In brief” summary.

For a Schengen visa, yes: at least €30,000 of travel medical insurance (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, art. 15).

  • Many other countries ask for it on entry or for a visa, case by case: check Before you go › Entry, with your passport.

What Maximum knows

The 207 country pages — hospitals, pharmacies, police, embassies, emergency numbers, official advice from four governments, health, safety in figures, events in progress — read around the city you name. Your policy — benefits, the six steps, claims, articles. The site — prices, certificate, subscription. Nothing else: what it does not know, it says so and hands you to an adviser.

Travelling to Dakar: what changes

The published advisory level is national, but risk is not: business hubs (Dakar) do not share the profile of border areas. The medical network shown on this page is computed around Dakar — real hospitals, evacuation airport and live alerts. Before a specific trip, always cross-check your country of residence's advisory: that is what your policy cites.

Same advisory level: Palau · Paraguay · Poland · French Polynesia · Portugal · Romania

Cross-check with official sources
U.S. State Department → UK FCDO → France Diplomatie → DFAE (Suisse) →

The displayed level comes from the State Department, checked every morning. Before departure, always cross-check your country of residence's advisory: that is what your policy cites.

The level shown is the official U.S. Department of State level, checked daily. Maximum Insurance is an insurance distributor — general information, not personal advice.
