How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

Recommended vaccines and medicines9

Routine vaccinesCDC ↗

Make sure you are up-to-date on all routine vaccines before every trip. Some of these vaccines include Chickenpox (Varicella) Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis (DTaP, Tdap, or Td) Flu (influenza) Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) Polio Shingles

COVID-19CDC ↗

All eligible travelers should be up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines. Please see  Your COVID-19 Vaccination  for more information.

Hepatitis ACDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers one year old or older going to Hungary. Infants 6 to 11 months old should also be vaccinated against Hepatitis A. The dose does not count toward the routine 2-dose series. Travelers allergic to a vaccine component should receive a single dose of immune globulin, which provides effective protection for up to 2 months depending on dosage given.

Hepatitis BCDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers younger than 60 years old traveling to Hungary. Unvaccinated travelers 60 years and older may get vaccinated before traveling to Hungary.

MeaslesCDC ↗

Cases of measles are on the rise worldwide. Travelers are at risk of measles if they have not been fully vaccinated at least two weeks prior to departure, or have not had measles in the past, and travel internationally to areas where measles is spreading.

MonkeypoxCDC ↗

Monkeypox vaccination is recommended for any adult who anticipates any of the following activities during travel: Sexual or intimate contact with a new partner Sexual or intimate contact at a commercial sex venue, like a sex club or bathhouse Sexual or intimate contact in exchange for money, goods, drugs, or other trade Sexual or intimate contact in association with a large public event, such as a rave, party, or…

RabiesCDC ↗

Dogs infected with rabies are not commonly found in Hungary. Rabies is present in some terrestrial wildlife species. If rabies exposures occur while in Hungary, rabies vaccines may only be available in larger suburban/urban medical facilities.

Tick-borne EncephalitisCDC ↗

For travelers moving or traveling to TBE-endemic areas TBE vaccine is recommended for persons who will have extensive exposure to ticks based on their planned outdoor activities and itinerary. TBE vaccine may be considered for persons who might engage in outdoor activities in areas ticks are likely to be found.

Yellow FeverCDC ↗

CDC recommendations: Vaccine is not recommended. Country entry requirements: Vaccine is not required. Updated April 23, 2025

The official advice, in full

Source: France Diplomatie (health advice, in French).

In brief
  • Pack a personal pharmacy with only necessary medications in original packaging with original labels and an international non-proprietary name prescription; never take medicines bought on the street due to counterfeit risks. France Diplomatie
  • Ensure your routine French vaccinations are up to date before travel, as vaccine-preventable diseases may circulate more widely abroad than in France. France Diplomatie
  • Present the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) to access necessary state healthcare in Hungary; these cards do not replace travel insurance and do not cover repatriation or private healthcare costs. Foreign Office

  • Hépatite A : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Rage : notamment enfants en bas âge, séjour en milieu rural ou éloigné des villes principales (cf. ci-dessous) ;

Risques sanitaires

Hépatite A

Health — Foreign Office

Before you travel check that:

  • your destination can provide the healthcare you may need
  • you have appropriate travel insurance for local treatment or unexpected medical evacuation

This is particularly important if you have a health condition or are pregnant.

Emergency medical number

Dial 112 and ask for an ambulance.

Contact your insurance or medical assistance company quickly if you’re referred to a medical facility for treatment.

Vaccine recommendations and health risks

At least 8 weeks before your trip:

  • check the latest vaccine recommendations for Hungary
  • see where to get vaccines and whether you have to pay on the NHS travel vaccinations page

See what health risks you’ll face in Hungary .

Medication

The legal status and regulation of some medicines prescribed or bought in the UK can be different in other countries.

Read best practice when travelling with medicines on TravelHealthPro .

Healthcare in Hungary

FCDO has a list of medical facilities in Hungary where some staff will speak English.

Health insurance cards

To get medically necessary state healthcare in Hungary, you need a Global Health Insurance Card ( GHIC ) or a European Health Insurance Card ( EHIC ).

The NHS’s getting healthcare abroad webpage has details about:

  • how to apply for a GHIC
  • how to get temporary cover if you lose your card or it does not arrive in time
  • who qualifies for a new EHIC instead of a GHIC
  • what treatment counts as medically necessary

A GHIC or EHIC is not an alternative to travel insurance. You may have costs your GHIC or EHIC does not cover, including:

  • changes to travel and accommodation bookings
  • additional standard costs for treatment
  • medical repatriation to the UK
  • treatment that is ruled non-urgent
  • private healthcare
  • private clinics

There is also guidance on healthcare if you’re living in Hungary .

  • ne pas transporter des sommes d’argent importantes (le paiement par carte étant très répandu) ;
  • laisser ses documents d’identité et de voyage dans un lieu sûr et se munir de photocopies de ses papiers ;
  • répartir dans des poches différentes cartes de crédit, argent liquide et documents d’identité ;
  • se montrer vigilant sur les trajets en train de nuit ;
  • ne pas se rendre dans des établissements nocturnes sur les conseils des chauffeurs de taxis ;

Swiss passport — FDFA (Switzerland), in French

In brief
  • While travel to Hungary is generally safe, be aware of potential disruptions during demonstrations and the ongoing regional tensions due to Russia's military aggression against Ukraine.
  • Terrorist attacks cannot be ruled out; stay informed via media and local contacts, avoid demonstrations, and follow official directives.
  • Be cautious of petty crime, especially in public transport and tourist areas, and verify police identity by a 5-digit service number and credit-card-like ID.
  • When driving, park in monitored areas, do not exit your vehicle if approached by strangers simulating car trouble, and be wary of drug-facilitated robberies.
  • Exchange money only at official financial institutions and use ATMs inside banks during opening hours; exercise caution with credit cards, particularly in restaurants.
  • Secondary roads can be in poor condition, and dangerous driving necessitates caution; a vignette is required for motorways and some main roads.

Faithful summary of the official texts below, which prevail.

Safety — Foreign Office

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad .

Terrorism in Hungary

Terrorist attacks in Hungary cannot be ruled out.

Political situation

Political demonstrations can be held in Budapest and across Hungary. Rallies often take place on important national holidays, such as 15 March (anniversary of 1848 Revolution) and 23 October (anniversary of 1956 anti-Soviet Uprising). Peaceful demonstrations have sometimes turned violent. Move away from large crowds and monitor local media to help you avoid organised demonstrations.

Protecting yourself and your belongings

Tourists can be targets for petty crime. Bag-snatching and pickpocketing are common, especially in Budapest and other cities.

Street crime is more likely:

  • on busy public transport
  • in train stations
  • at markets
  • in places with high numbers of tourists

When travelling by train keep a close watch on your baggage, especially as the train pulls into a station.

Leave your car or motorbike in a secure location if possible to reduce the risk of it being stolen. Theft from parked vehicles is common, so always put bags out of sight and do not store valuable items in your car.

Scams when paying bills

Some bars, clubs and restaurants might charge high amounts for food and drink. Tourists have been taken to cashpoints with demands for the money to pay the bill. Always ask to see the menu and price list before ordering food and check your bill carefully before paying. Be wary of establishments where menus do not properly display prices. Report any incidents to the police.

Some taxi drivers are part of these frauds. They may receive a commission to recommend certain bars, clubs and restaurants to passengers. If a taxi driver offers to take you to a bar or club, or you are approached on the street with an invitation, be cautious. Use taxis from a reputable local company.

Bank card fraud

Use official ATMs or banks. Do not change money on the street.

Fraudsters can steal your card details without you noticing. Use ATMs inside banks if possible, and check ATMs on the street for signs of tampering. Keep cards in sight when paying in shops and restaurants. Read more about how to avoid bank card fraud .

Drink spiking

There have been reports of drinks being spiked, particularly in Budapest’s bars. If your drink is spiked it can make you vulnerable – for example to assault or robbery. Buy your own drinks and keep sight of them.

Personal ID

Always carry your passport. You must show ID if the police ask for it, and a copy is not acceptable.

Illegal drugs

Illegal drugs, including cannabis, carry severe penalties. You should expect a long jail sentence and heavy fines for possessing, using or smuggling illegal drugs, including when transiting through the airport.

Airports in Hungary have excellent technology and security for detecting illegal items. This is also used to scan the baggage of transiting passengers.

LGBT+ travellers

Same-sex sexual activity is legal in Hungary. Budapest is generally tolerant and open. Outside of Budapest, showing affection in public may receive unwanted attention. Read more advice for LGBT+ travellers .

2SLGBTQI+ persons

A new child protection law passed in March 2025 has been used to ban the Budapest Pride March and could continue to be used as the legal basis to ban future 2SLGBTQI+ Pride events. This law also allows authorities to use facial recognition technology to identify and fine anyone who takes part in these events. International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. The convention applies between Canada and Hungary. If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in Hungary, and if the applicable conditions are met, you may apply for the return of your child to the Hungarian court. If you are in this situation:

  • act as quickly as you can
  • contact the Central Authority for your province or territory of residence for information on starting an application under The Hague Convention
  • consult a lawyer in Canada and in Hungary to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
  • report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to the Vulnerable Children's Consular Unit at Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies. Be aware that Canadian consular officials cannot interfere in private legal matters or in another country's judicial affairs.

Identification

You must carry photo identification, such as your passport, at all times. Photocopies are not accepted. Keep a photocopy of your passport in a safe place, in case it’s lost or confiscated.

Driving

Police strictly enforce traffic regulations. The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.00%. Penalties for drinking and driving are severe. If a police officer suspects you of drinking and driving, they could confiscate your driver’s licence on the spot. If you’re convicted, you can expect heavy fines and jail sentences. Police also conduct routine road checks, including the administration of breathalyser tests. Police automatically administer breathalyser tests following an accident. Police issue a ticket indicating the amount of the fine for traffic violations. This fine is to be paid at any post office. Police may retain your driver’s licence if you dispute a fine or offence. They’ll then issue a receipt and letter instructing you to report to a police station. Your driver’s licence is returned upon settlement of the dispute. You should carry an international driving permit.

Vignettes

You’ll need a motorway vignette (permit) to travel on highways. You may purchase these electronic vignettes at gas stations, online or using your mobile phone. If the vendor doesn’t issue stickers, you must keep receipts for one year as proof of payment. Buy e-Vignette online - Hungarian motorway vignette

Public transportation

You must validate your ticket at the start of your journey. You must show it to an inspector upon request. Violators are subject to fines, or arrest and prosecution.

Money

The currency in Hungary is the forint (HUF). Euros are accepted in Budapest and some other major cities where a sign is posted. Rates may not be very competitive. Don’t use unofficial moneychangers. If you are carrying €10,000 or more, or the equivalent in other currencies or monetary instruments, you must make a declaration to customs when you enter or leave the European Union.

Hungary follows Schengen area rules . Your passport must:

  • have a ‘date of issue’ less than 10 years before the date you arrive – if you renewed your passport before 1 October 2018, it might have a date of issue that is more than 10 years ago, making it invalid for entry to the Schengen area
  • have an ‘expiry date’ at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen area (the expiry date does not need to be within 10 years of the date of issue)

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement . See Dual citizenship .

Visa requirements

You can travel without a visa to the Schengen area , which includes Hungary, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This applies if you travel:

  • as a tourist
  • to visit family or friends
  • to attend business meetings, cultural or sports events
  • for short-term studies or training

The requirements for working in Hungary are different.

If you’re travelling to other Schengen countries as well, make sure your whole visit is within the 90-day visa-free limit. Visits to Schengen countries in the 180 days before you travel count towards your 90 days. If you overstay the 90-day visa-free limit, you may be banned from entering Schengen countries for up to 3 years.

At Hungarian border control, you may also need to:

  • show a return or onward ticket
  • prove you have enough money for your stay
  • show proof of accommodation, for example, a hotel booking
Staying longer than 90 days in a 180-day period

To stay longer, check which type of visa or work permit you need with the Hungarian Embassy in the UK .

For residence permits, see the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing .

If you’re in Hungary with a residence permit or long-stay visa, this does not count towards your 90-day visa-free limit.

Read about entry processes if you live in Hungary.

New Schengen entry requirements

The European Union’s (EU) new Entry/Exit System (EES) is now being implemented across the Schengen area.

This means that when you travel into the Schengen area for short stays, you may need to register your biometric details, such as fingerprints and a photo. There is no cost for EES registration.

On your first visit into a Schengen country, you may be asked to register your details at a special booth before proceeding to the immigration desk. Follow directions from your travel operator or the staff at your port of entry. You may also need to provide either your fingerprint or…

What is the official risk level in Hungary today?

  • Is the whole country advised against? United States: no · France: no · United Kingdom: no · Switzerland: no (reading of 27 September 2026).
  • Contractually, only an FDFA, FOPH or WHO advisory against the trip opens Module A (art. 18.1) — that is not the case today.

Is the whole of Hungary advised against, or only some areas?

An area advised against does not rule out the country.

What are the entry requirements for Hungary with my passport?

The rules depend on the passport, not on the destination alone.

  • French passport (France Diplomatie): French nationals may enter Hungary for stays under 3 months with a valid passport or French national identity card (CNI). For stays beyond 90 days, apply for a residence permit by the 93rd day at the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing (Országos Idegenrendészeti Főigazgatóság) using https://oif.gov.hu/factsheets/registration-certificate-for-eea-nationals. French CNIs issued to adults between 1 January 2004 and 31 December 2013 remain valid for 5 years past the printed expiry date, but may cause border issues when leaving Hungary for non-Schengen countries.
  • British passport (Foreign Office): British citizens must have a passport issued less than 10 years before arrival; if renewed before 1 October 2018, the issue date may exceed 10 years and invalidate entry to the Schengen area. Passports must expire at least 3 months after the planned departure from the Schengen area. British travellers can enter Hungary visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period for tourism, family visits, business, cultural or sports events, or short-term studies.
  • American passport: the requirements are on the State Department country page (travel.state.gov).
  • Swiss passport: the FDFA refers you to the destination's embassy in Switzerland.
  • Pick your passport at the top of Before you go › Entry: the official text that concerns you comes first, with its “In brief” summary.

Do I need an insurance certificate for a Hungary visa?

For a Schengen visa, yes: at least €30,000 of travel medical insurance (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, art. 15).

  • Many other countries ask for it on entry or for a visa, case by case: check Before you go › Entry, with your passport.
  • Subscribe: the named certificate arrives by e-mail on payment, with your name, dates and limits (EUR 1.5M medical expenses, unlimited evacuation and repatriation) — the ones consulates check.

Are a health plan or a travel policy enough in Hungary?

What Maximum knows

The 207 country pages — hospitals, pharmacies, police, embassies, emergency numbers, official advice from four governments, health, safety in figures, events in progress — read around the city you name. Your policy — benefits, the six steps, claims, articles. The site — prices, certificate, subscription. Nothing else: what it does not know, it says so and hands you to an adviser.
